Bulgarian Makarov

A local gun shop is having a sale on NIB Bulgarian 9MM Makarovs.
You get the pistol, lanyard and holster, two 8 round magazines, and fifty rounds of 109gr. FMJ ammo. All for $169.00.
I've read some good posts regarding Maks so how about it? Is this a good deal on a good pistol??

A couple of months ago I would've said it's too high. Lately prices on NIB unissued military Bulgies have been going up. Make sure it's a military Bulgie and not a commercial one. The military ones tend to have nocer finishes.

I suggest that you do a site search (little link at the top right hand corner of the topic listing) for bulgarian makarov and just makarov. There are a lot of posts regarding these excellent little guns. The price isn't too bad, mine was $20 cheaper for the same thing.

I just picked up my mak at ammoman on Thursday. Nice little weapon. Try www.makarovinfo.com and www.makarov.comfor lots of stuff on the mak. Went to the range Thursday night and it shot a little high, and really torn the paper. Kicked harder then my springfield 45. I'm going to get a set of pearce grips which I have read will help. Good luck

I have an E. German and if I remember correctly I paid either $149. or $159. handpicked from SOG. I don't think your price of $169. with goodies and ammo is to bad. I like my E. German its a good little shooter :) If you like the Bulgie go for it ;)
Hope this helps :)
Happy Shooting :)

I ordered a Bulgarian Military Mak from J&G Sales a month or two ago. Cost was $110 each in quantities or two or more. I like it a lot. It was nearly new and came with Pierce rubber grips at no extra charge. But extra magazines cost me around $6 each. I think you'll be happy with the pistol.

Regarding the price, that sounds reasonable to me. You might be able to save a few dollars by ordering it, but probably not much. I think mine wound up costing me around $135 with shipping and FFL fee. The ammo is probably worth at least $5-$6 a box (assuming its cheap steel-case import stuff), and the holster is also probably worth $5-$8 (assuming its a used military or police holster). And if you buy from your dealer, you get to see what you are getting up front, and support a local guy you probably like having around. I'd probably offer to take it if he'll throw in an extra couple of boxes of ammo.

If you want to look into ordering, check J&G Sales and AIM Surplus. Both have these at good prices.

Buy it, but leave the ammo.

The 109gr stuff is TCW (Tula Cartridge Works)ammo, some people love it, but it is loaded VERY hot for the Mak, military strength in fact. You are better served using Sellier & Bellot FMJ for practise or even defence.

The 2 main JHP's are provided by Hornady and Corbon (but like TCW this is also hot loaded so beware).

I don't like over-pressure ammo but like I said, some people love it.

WLM;

That is a fair price for the Bulgie! I have 2 EG's and a Russian Military and wouldn't trade them for twice the value. Well designed and combat accurate.

Actually I found that Maks love hot ammo, the hotter the better. They were designed to take standard military rounds like TCW, WOlf and other Russian makes.

Mine liked the hotter ammo also. I had an Arsenal and a friend needed a reliablle compact so i sold it to him and bought a mil/surp. The hotter ammo broke in the Arsenal real quick (250 rounds). It loosened up BUT was not hurt in anyway.

Okay, I've seen the J&G Sales websight. What/Where is SOG and AIM Surplus? They have websites too? Or do you have to call/stop by?

SOG has no web site and I believe Aim does but I don't know what it is. You can find both listed in the Shotgun News and the Gun List. You should be able to get them at your local news stand. I believe that SOG has a pretty good deal right now on both the E.German and the Bulgarian Maks. In dealing with both you have got to have an FFL unless you can go there personally. I have a Curios and Relics liscense that allowed me to purchase my E.German. Which I might add was really nice and purchased from SOG.
Hope this helps ;)

Found web site for Aim, WWW.AIMSURPLUS.com
