Bulgarian Mak to the range

Shot the last of the 3 latest Mak purchases this weekend an unissued Bulgie. 125 rds of Russian 95gr FMJ 9x18. 100% reliable. Shoots to POA with typical VG accuracy. Even after being cleaned 3 times still sweats grease from its pores. Mag was hard to remove after warm up but may be due to grease. Finish is better than Russian Com but not as good as EG.Accuracy is only limited due to small sights and my 52 year old eyes.

Tom,

Glad to hear your Bulgi rocks like the rest of its brethern. The Bulgies are the last true bargain.

Did you take the slide unit completely apart when cleaning? Grease tends to hide in the small crannies of the slide. Did you use kerosene or something like Gun Scrubber? I've found that leaving the parts in a cleaner for about 30 minutes then letting them dry completely usually does the trick. Cleaners like CLP just gum up the grease.

Tom,
The Mak is a terrific little gun and a great bargin. I currently have four, one which I plan to give to a cousin. I'm even thinking of buying a couple more to hoard. The first one I bought was a Russian commercial w/ adj sights. Paid $99 for it NIB. Wish I had a couple more. These things grow on you! It feeds everything including Cor Bon and Hornady XTP. The last three I purchased within the last month or so; two Bulgies and an EG. None of the three will reliably feed Cor Bon or Hornady XTP ammunition. So far they feed Federal Classic 90 gr HP. FYI Natchez has it on sale for $10.60 for a box of 50 rounds. $10.00 if you buy 10 boxes. I have ordered the barrel puller and will get a friend to work on the feed ramp for me. The EG is the nicest of all, but I like the Bulgies as well for the price. Let us know if you try HP. Jerry

Tom B,
You may be able to get the mags more easily if you loosen the grip screw just a hair. The first time I disassembled and cleaned my Makarov I horsed down the screw. Suddenly the magazines were hard to get in and out. I gave the grip screw a little tweak and suddenly all was right with the world. Give it a try. Lots more info at www.makarov.com if you are interested.

So, any of you Mak likers think the "Mighty Makarov" makes a good self defense weapon or even concealed carry weapon? I've never even held one, let alone shot one. But it seems that all I've read about them is basically good. Are they really 1) a super gun; or 2) a really good gun, for the price you paid? After all, couldn't you get 4, maybe 5 for the price of one Glock? Thoughts?

And hey, while I'm rolling, is its slide pull about the same as my Ruger P89, 9mm? My wife can't budge the P89 slide. Happy 9x18ing!

Snow Man - Is the Mak good for CCW? Well there is one sitting outside in the dash of my pickup right now while my Glocks and BHPs are left at home. Thats about as close to CCW as I have been in awhile. Slide hard to cycle? The Mak has a 17lb recoil spring and less mass than a Ruger or Glock. I don't know as compared to the P89 but the Mak slide doesn't require much force. My 3 are as accurate at 25yds as my G26/G27. They appear as well made as any other guns I have seen. The grip screw arrangement is the only part I can find fault with. Apple A Day - Yes I installed Pearce grips on 2 of mine last night and I see what you are talking about. I don't like the fact that the screw cannot be tightened and I posted this question on makarov.com and the answers I got said that it was normal and had not caused anyone problems. For about $150. I would say Maks are very good.

SnowMan - my East German Mak is not accurate at a distance but for CCW that shouldn't matter. I think it's a practical CCW gun if you can't afford something more appropriate. The Maks sights are tiny. The Mak cartridge is closer to a .380 ACP than a 9mm Luger. So, for CCW glockdoc carries his Glock 26.

Yes, the Maks are great CCW pistols. I have three and love them all. They are accurate: I was shooting at the 25 yd. range at some steel bowling pin silhouettes and hitting them consistently. A guy came over to my station to see what pistol i was using and could not believe it was the "little" Mak. He also couldn't believe it was a milsurp type gun I bought for $149.

As for CCW, with the right holster, they're easily concealed and have a reasonable powered round. It isn't a 45+P, but, with good shot placement, it should do the trick.
