Built in locks for revolvers.

I've seen a picture of a Taurus revolver with their Security System. I would appreciate any comments about how well these work and do other manufacturers make a built in action lock like this. I don't like the idea of a trigger lock, but would like to have the option of locking the action of a revolver. Thanks for any input.

My Taurus .357 has the hammer lock. I don't use the lock myself, but my gf keeps it locked when her kid is there.

It's easy enough to use, but I wouldn't want to try unlocking it under stress.

I'd hate to have my Taurus locked. 1) locked/unlocked status isn't all that abvious. 2)easy to fumble with the lock in the dark under stress

Better than trigger locks though...just not much more useful.

Taurus is also equipping at least some models of their semi-autos with an internal lock. It's near the bottom of the grip, on the back strap.

I had a Taurus 85 Ultralight that had the internal lock in the hammer. I never used it after I tried it a couple of times right after I bought it. It never caused a problem during the 2 years I ownded the gun.

Is this a key lock, or some sort of hidden button mechanism?

If it is a key, I wonder how much testing has been done on the affects of powder residue on the mechanism. I would think it would lower the useful life of the tool considerably.

I would hate to have the darn thing break or fail.

A safety lever can be re-worked if it pops up. I'd hate to call time-out in a firefight to go find my hex-key.

I used to like Taurus, but since that key-lock, I have not, and will not, buy another one.

I've had two Taurus revolvers with the lock. Both were 85's.
I don't use it often, but I like it. The hammer is only locked if the gun is in storage, never when I am home or carry.

The worst thing that could happen is stripping the hex (same as stripping an Allen bolt). That would require sending it back to Taurus, most likely.

If you are going to use this revolver for home defense, you don't want to have to worry about unlocking it when you need it.

I have 4 taurus revolvers with the new key lock system. I Have never even put the keys in the locks. I like the concept for people with young children in the house. I just don't use them, because I have enough common sense to lock my handguns in my safe unless I'm carrying them. I see no problem with the system though... If you ever get the chance to see it from the inside you will see what I mean. It is really quite simple, and has no stress put on it unless you try to force the hammer back while it is locked. I have about 5,000 rounds thru the 4 guns, and have had no problems. If you won't buy a Taurus because of the lock, your gonna be in trouble in a few years... I'd be willing to bet that MOST guns have internal locks in the near future.

Not mentioned yet on this thread are two companies that offer semiautos with locks: HK and Steyr. HK's lock has problems that hve been detailed here and on the HK forum. The Steyr, however, seems quite acceptable to me. It's easily ignored if you don't want to use it, and it doesn't appear that it would be able to fail in a manner that would disable the gun.
