Building The One

I'm looking to build that one do it all rifle. By "do it all" I mean hunting all North American big game short of the Grizzly. I want light enough to carry on the mountain all day and superb accuracy. As always, I come to the folks here for advice.

I've narrowed my preferred smiths/ builder to Rifles INC http://www.riflesinc.com/ or NULA http://www.newultralight.com/.

Caliber wise I want versatility which means something in 30 cal or 7mm so I can shoot all kinds of projectiles. I will most likely load Partitions or Accubonds (or similar fair) in either caliber but have been looking at Berger's hunting bullets as well. I'm thinking 30-06, 280AI, 7mm Rem Mag,or 300 WSM.

Lets also add in I may want to shoot up to 500 yards if I have to (especially if its the last day of a once in a lifetime hunt and I feel like I can take it).

Both builders make them light and accurate. What are your experiences/ suggestions? I do not care about action type but would most likely go with the Model 70 if I go through Rifles INC.

Thanks for all your thoughts and help.

I think the smartest cartridge choice would be a short magnum. You asked about everything up to but not including griz, and In this case, you have a fine elk round, and great round for anything smaller. You can also create lower impact rounds by handloading, for smaller game.

The only think I'd question about it is whether a short magnum can do long (400+) shots on sheep, goats, or such.

Caliber I'd choose would be the .300 Win Mag. It's readily available, cheaper then most and it will take care of everything in NA including the bears. If it's a light rifle and you are reloading I suppose the short magnums and new powders might give less recoil. You'll feel recoil in a light rifle so you might even want to drop down to a 270 WSM or 7mm Rem mag.

Action doesn't matter. A gunsmith should be able to make anything shoot although Rifles Inc. shows some targets below their in stock rifles.

NULA makes their own actions and they been using the same stock design almost 20yrs. I know nothing about Rifle Inc other than whats on their site and they use factory actions. Mel Forbes was the first to build a truly light rifle with his Model 20 in 284.

My wife shot a Mel Forbes model 24 in 280AI nice rifle.

My go to rifles is a 30-338mag and I'm on my 3rd one. Well good luck

if you haven't already, you should surf on over to longrangehunting.com. They live for the type of rifle you just discribed. Lots of experienced people over there.

Thanks so far!

Keep the info coming guys. I will have to pass on the Blaser, I'm not looking for a single shot right now.
