Building a low cost AR

Could an Ar-15 be built at a significantly lower price than buying a complete rifle?
Nothing fancy, just the basic rifle.

What can a lower reciever be obtained for? Where's a good place to find one? Is it worth the trouble and are there many problems with this? I've done a lot of shopping and the lowest price complete rifle I've found has been about $750.

Yes. If you choose a kit rifle and build the upper and lower, you can get in the upper $500 or low $600 range.

Be very careful with kits rifles. Some brands are junk and will cause you many headaches. As a kit gun you wiull have no warranty.

I suggest you go over to AR15.com to the "Build it Yourself" forum and get yourself some good information from those who have built many kit rifles - from reputable and quality dealers. There is a wealth of info there and many helpful shooters standing by. I have no experience with a whole kit. i have built the lowers before.

Building a rifle is a very rewarding experience not only because, well, it's just cool, but because when completed you will KNOW how to work on the rifle should you ever have a problem with it.

Good luck.

I recently bought a kit from Olympic Arms for $550, which includes the price of the receiver. But I only got it so cheap because I have a friend who is an FFL, so he doesn't charge me an upcharge. This kit includes a fully assembled & test fired upper, and the parts for the lower. The barrel is chrome-moly steel, but is not chrome plated. The receiver, which is all you need you FFL to buy, will cost him $80. If he charges a $25 fee, you'll end up spending $575, which is still a deal. // Richardson

Consider instead, getting a Bushmaster
"Shorty AK." Jerry's Sports Center is
offering them for under $700 (plus shipping),
dealer cost. You get the name-brand
reliability plus guarantee. I've known two
of them up close and personal so far.
They're nice.

I built a Bushmaster up about 10 years ago and can recommend them if you are looking for a build it yourself.

You can probably get a better price on their kits from Gunsmoke Enterprises out of Okeechobee, Florida. Ed Bastille is the owner and a Bushmaster dealer.

Gunsmoke advertises and has a forum over on ar15.com. I have bought stuff from him in the past and he has good prices and is very customer focused.

Likewise, I have bought directly from Bushmaster and they will cost you a little more.

It really is tough to beat a Bushmaster build kit. They are the standard everyone else tries to copy.

Plus, the lowers are forged, not cast, as most of the other kitmakers lowers are.
