Building a long range rifle

I have the money to buy an accuracy international rifle, but, would it be more cost effective to start from scratch and build my own rifle. I am looking at shooting out to 600m-1000m accurately with moa accuracy capability but don't know if that is feasable at this time...due to me. But with practice I want to match the ability of the gun. I am looking at 300WinMag or .338 Lapua for the simple reason I feel .308 loses to much velocity at longer ranges.

So, I guess the question is not only should I get the AI, build my own, but also any suggestions that come to mind for anyone to add.

My only desire is to shoot accurately at long ranges...more of a personal goal through the use of proper technique and becoming one with the rifle than anything else.

Besides, I feel SO MUCH better after a day at the range.:)

Thanks for any and all input.

It is stated the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. In building a rifle for your specs, this can be true. If you can build one, great idea, but save your pennies. By the time you purchase parts, find a riflesmith and pay his labor costs, it gets real expensive. A couple of companies build rifles that are top notch, why not look at them and compare prices to a project rifle and a production rifle?
I would stay away from the .338 Lapua Mag, it is a good round, lots of recoil and $$$ to reload. The .300 can be had in a couple match configurations.

I've toyed with the idea of making a LR mouse gun out of a M98, chambered in .22-250 with a 1:8 twist 26" barrel specifically chambered for 80 Sierra MK's or equals (Bergers, A-Max JDK's).

I have not seen any published loads but it should be possible to get 3200 ft/sec out of this which would put the bullet at 1000 yards easily, assuming a BC of .44-.48.

One could shoot this all day and ammo costs would be 1/2 that of the big bore magnum class.

If you have the money for an AI, then get one. You will not be sorry and these rifles have features that you cannot have built, and cannot match in quality. And yes, I have owned one and selling it was one of the biggest mistakes I have made in my life. I wish I would have payed for my LASIK some other way...

Long Range Rifle

You might consider waiting a short while and seeing what is offered by Winchester (their new .300 Winchester Short Mag) and from Remington. It's reported that Big Green may come out with a shortened Ultra to fit in a short action like Winchester did with the .300 WSM.

Just my two cents.

BTW I'm looking at a long range rifle based on a TC Encore. Considering the Rem Ultra Mag in .375. Looks VERY good to me.
