The thing you are going to have to be very careful about, if you choose to put together a rifle from parts (or have someone else do it for you), is that there are a lot of "new" parts out there that are just old parts with new parkerizing -- which makes it pretty nearly impossible to assess, by eye, its condition. You'd have to gage and blueprint every part to make sure you were within original USGI specs. Many of the parts kits are from rifles with a lot of wear...the receivers are very hard and would last almost forever, with some care, but that is not true of the rest, and you'll pull your hair out trying to troubleshoot it if it gets filled with parts that are out of spec. Good luck, whichever -- a properly functioning Garand is a joy to shoot!
