Building a 257 Roberts

Hello all. I was wondering roughly what I should budget for having a 'smith rebarrel and convert a sporter-type rifle in 7x57 Mauser to a 257 Roberts.

The headspacing is the same, right? What else would be involved beyond the actual re-barreling?

Thanks.

Crat22, as long as the barrel contour you choose works with the stock then yes it is just a basic rebarreling job. Assuming that's all there is to it then in my shop it would run you $255.00 plus the barrel blank and return shipping. Some shops will charge less, some more. As to the headspace, it will change slightly when the action and bolt face are trued, lugs lapped etc. George

I think the brass for the 257 is a little shorter that 7X57. The reason I say this is I have a 257 AK imp. that will separate heads with 257 but not 7X57 brass, on the first fireing. Then again the guy that chambered it may have ran the reamer in too far. No I did not do the chamber.

Let me rephrase. As to the headspace the go gage protrusion would be the same if no changes are made to the bolt and receiver face. But when those surfaces are trued you remove a little metal which will make the shank length a hair shorter and the actual protrusion a bit longer. George
