building 1911 steel frame

I have just purchased an Aluminum framed Kimber Custom II tactical. My use will include home protection and some ccw.

In addition, I have thought about building up a steel frame to mate with my slide for USPSA. Looking at frames at Midway I might start with an STI or Caspian. What references would give me the direction for this project and suggest components? It seemed like a great winter project. Thanks for suggestions. Maybe I should just pickup a Springfield loaded with battle scars and go from there?

go over to brownells website and ask 'em for a copy of their 1911 catalog #4.
good selection of frames and other components along with some build ideas.
the carry everything from essex for $150 to caspian to les bear and sti frames at over $500. similar selection on slides, barrels etc. one stop shopping!
another good source Is Fusion Firearms. well priced "match grade" components and the owner, Bob Serva, will customize to your specs.
both STI and Fusion sell prefitted frame/slide packages as well.
STI even offeres a long frame, compensated "short block kit" that you add a fire control kit, sites and finish to. a little pricey at $1500 though.
just my 2c

I'm happily discovering how much I do not know about 1911,whch is to say I am moving from unconcious imcompetence through concious incompetence toward concious competence.

A very good investment might be Kuhnhausen's books.I just bought vol 2 and it is a wealth of understanding what is critical about a 1911.

I also ordered the 4DVD set of Wilson's Combat 1911 gunsmithing instruction.
The Khunhausen is written like an ordnance document, dimension drawings, and technical descriptions.

These DVD's are:

"Now when you take this new part out of the bag,you need to get a number 2 cut 6 inch pillar file, put the part in the vise like this, and file this right here till....And,do not ....

I think ,in tandem,I have a good resource.

I suggest, its not a bad idea to get the Caspian frame. And,I'd get the instruction materials and study them before you spend more.

Tolerances and all,to use your slide, bbl, and link on another frame, and get it all to time, lock, etc just right, can be done, but it is far more than buying parts and assemblig them.
