I was reading Guns magazine and read an advertisment for Paladin press. In the add there is a video for building a .50cal at home. On the web site this is the description of the video...
HOME WORKSHOP .50-CALIBER SNIPER RIFLE (video)
by with Bill Holmes
In this video, Bill Holmes teaches you how to make a .50-caliber bolt-action sniper rifle in your home workshop. Bill takes you step by step through the fabrication process and shows you the secrets of transforming a surplus M-2 heavy machine gun barrel and some readily available raw materials into an awesome long-range precision rifle. Covers the exact methods of fabricating the upper and lower receivers, trigger group, bolt and bolt locking lugs, firing pin, striker and even the mounts for a telescopicsight. Because the proof is in the shooting, this video also includes dramatic footage of the test-firing of the finished gun. For information purposes only. Color, approx. 60 minutes.

:D :D :) :) :D :D
Have you seen this video, and is it legal or likly that I could actually build the beast?
I have always loved the Barret .50cal and if I could afford one I would buy one in a nanosecond. Also, where could I get a "surplus M-2 heavy mgb"?

Totally legal, totally unlikely.

Can be done, but it's expensive and must be done right.

Check out Birdman Weapons Systems for a good value on low cost, short-lifespan .50cal BMG products.

You might also want to check out http://www.watsonsweapons.com, and take a look at their .50 upper for an AR-15. If you've got an AR, this is probably the cheapest way to get a .50. I saw this guy at Knob Creek last year, and it seems like a good system. You push out the rear pin and drop the lower to spin the bolt in and out with a little wrench, then put the pin back in to fire.

yeah, and put my head right on top of a 50 when the homeade gun cant take the chamber pressure.
who's selling this thing? Dr. Kevorkian!

WHY? I REPEAT!!!!! WHY????? I fired a bolt action single shot rifle chambered in 50 bmg, once.......only once!!!!the second I pulled the trigger I got a headache and it stayed with me for three hours!!!!!!!

You can buy a set of prints for the .50 from Maadi-Griffen Co. It is in a book format and has machinist's drawings for every part and has pictures of the completed parts. This is a single shot, bolt action ,bull pup design. Any part that you cannot make, you may buy from them. The gun does require heat treating and tigging. It is not difficult to machine if you have machinist knowledge and patience and the right equipment.
I used a surplus M-2 barrel that was given to me. The gun is extremely accurate and with a good muzzel break design it is a joy to shoot. The best part is I have very little money in it. It looks good and shoots better...and a can of ammo costs more than I have in the rifle itself.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but...

To manufacture a cartridge firing firearm requires a
Class 7 FFL to be legal. At least I think that is the lisense level needed.

You even mentioned the video is for "informational purposes only". Those are legal weasel words meaning "You can do it like this, but if you do it at all the BATF will knock down your door, stomp your cat, shoot you, burn down your house, and beat heck out of your wife and children."

Save your money and buy a ready made rifle from a reputable dealer. You can not save enough money building it yourself to pay your lawyer and doctors.

then I guess I should not have e-mailed the atf to find out if it was OK to build then huh? thank you for the info.

the licence deal is for selling guns you manufacture

if you don't intend on selling your creation, you can build sans papers.

I bought that video last year.

If you already had a lot of machining practice,
you could probably do it. (Along with the the
several thousand dollars worth of machining tools
that the guy uses.)

The best analogy to it that I can think of is
that it's like watching an episode of The
New Yankee Workshop.

In the course of the hour you watch Norm put togther
a complicated piece of furniture with expensive tools
while making it look really easy to do. It' s fun to
watch him make an armoire from a pile of wood, but I'd
rather just buy one.

Same principle here.

(Of course there aren't bills to make armoires illegal sitting on some senator's desk. So it can't hurt to know
these things...)
