Build an HK 91?

Recently I've gotten the bug for a .308 battle rifle, and have looked at the Springfield M1A's, the DSA FAL's, and also have been lusting after an HK91. (Wish I'd bought that used one for $700 many years ago :( ).

Anyway, on some of the auction sites I've seen HK91 parts for sale, and I'm wondering if it's possible to build an all-HK rifle from parts, for less $$ than what a whole rifle would cost. This way I could spread the expenses out over a long period.

Opinions? Experiences?

There's no way to get a true HK receiver.

The nearest you can get is a FMP receiver and good parts. The most difficult part to find in new to excellent condition is the barrel. Either Terry Dyer or Murray Urbach will barrel a HK receiver with a premium grade barrel (can't remember which, exactly).

There's a few smiths over at the www.hk91.com board that will build up a HK-91 clone for you, but it will probably run just over $1000.

The wide availability of the -91 clones has pushed down the prices of real HK-91s, so you may be able to find some nice ones under $2000.

Mr. Destructo6 is pretty accurate in what he has stated.
True H&K receivers are difficult to come across.
I know SOG International what selling FMP~Indep receivers built G3s assembled by CIA for $600.00
recently (dealer's price). Their quality is really decent. I know...I bought one. This is as close a one can get to a genuine G3. And I didn't spend $2500~$3000! ;)
The gun shop I bought it through started buying up to 5 more in all after I got mine. That's how nice they are. Last time I looked on their web-site, they had removed the ad for the G3s. So I don't know if they're still available. Mine shoots 1"~1 1/4" 100 yds. I don't think I could have built a nicer one for $720.00!
They are awesome guns...that's fo-shooo!!
Good luck with your project whatever you end up deciding to do with the H&K.

I like and have a 91 type rifle. Aftering reading alot about these "parts guns", I really think there are better home projects. The FAL design lends itself better to basic gunsmithing because nothing is pressed or welded. I would be more likely to look at a cheap FAL or .308 VEPR than a cobbled together G3, despite liking the G3 design best. There's alot out there, choose carefully.

I was considering the same thing. After careful delliberation and looking at prices on the web, I decided to just buy a real one.

A year ago, with the fear of Gore getting in the White House, prices were really high. They have fallen some, both because of Bush getting in, and because of the softer economy. Now is the time to get an HK if you want one.

I got a good deal on a real HK, with some accessories. I'm glad I did it that way, rather than buying it piece-meal.
If you are doing it for the fun of building the gun, then that is another consideration. I was more interested in the finished product than the process of getting it there.
