Build an AR ??

All kinds of info out there. I did it the easier way. I built 2 lowers the way I wanted them & just bought the uppers already to pin on.

Why do you need books when you have google? I built my own without buying any books. The key thing to remember is that it's not cheaper to build one than it is to buy one outright, so I hope you're not expecting that.

A reasonably high-quality rifle that you build yourself will cost you upwards of $1200, and if you ever go to sell it, you'll never be able to recoup the costs.

You should also lookup what kind of tools you're going to need, which varies depending on how your rifle is configured.

There are a couple of decent AR15-oriented forums on the net. They will answer ANY question you might have. Before asking a question, though, learn how to use the site's search functionality. Chances are VERY good that someone else has already asked the very question you have.

I have read several times over the past week about people saying that its not cheaper to roll your own ar. I am putting together a carbine right now that cost me $650ish. And I am using better parts than anything you'll find in a budget pre-built ar. A decent M&P 15 or Stag is gonna set you back 800-900 easy. You just have to shop it a bit.

My parts:

PSA lower $50
PSA lower kit $90
BCM 14.5 chrome lined upper,
carrier, magpul handguard,
and charging handle $491

Total of $631

Agree 100%. I can build a quality AR for several hundred less than what I can buy a mid tier AR for. The price of tools is negligible. You can spend $100 or less on all the special tools you will need to build your own. I have heard of the M&P Sport being sold as low as $650 but I haven't seen it for that price.

I almost bought a M&P 15 sport on a buddy's LE group buy. Until I found out it has no foward assist, dust cover, and is not chrome lined. I'll admit those things aren't important to everyone. But, I just can't see spending the same money for fewer features.

I bought 2 M&P flat top OR versions for $699 each and got a $100 rebate back from S&W. Now I do know not everyone can get them that cheap but if you find a good sale you can.

These were not the cheap Sport versions either.

That said I do think the next AR is going to be a home built. There are a number of great buys out there on uppers and the lower/upper receiver I want is anodized.

You should keep in mind what was stated above about the resale value. If you build your own plan on keeping it or if you sell it don't be disappointed on how little you get out of it. Factory built name brands just hold the value better.

Gosh, what a nice place to ask a question...

  • use the search function, we have talked about this before where were you?
  • use google - watch a video
  • go somewhere else they like the ar platform over there.
  • don't do it. it is wasting your time.
  • don't do it. you're wasting your money.
  • don't do it. you're wasting our time.

No wonder there is so much traffic on the rifle forum.

^^the videos for uppers and lowers on there are all you need. I've built 4 so far using them and they've come out great. I was a little nervous at first but now that I realize how easy it is I wonder why I ever bought an assembled one:eek:
