buckmark safety question

I purchased a Buckmark Camper this past weekend. Probably the best shooting handgun I've ever owned and I have no complaints about it at all. I have a question for the folks who have owned one for some time. Does the safety switch loosen up some over time? I can take it off of safety with the right thumb no problem (I shoot right handed), but it's tough to puch it back up onto safe with the same thumb. I usually have to hold the gun in my right hand and push the safety up with my left thumb. It's not really that big of a deal, but it would be nice to easily click it back up like I can click it down.

Thanks

I have the same issue with mine. Seems to take entirely too much manhandling to make it move, particularly when engaging the safety.

Buck Mark grip panels hold the controls in place. I think that some of "stoutness" of the safety on the BM Camper comes from the rubber grips. For example: I have a BM Plus UDX with wood grips and BM Standard with rubber grips. The UDX's safety is much easier to operate (easily engaged/disengaged with thumb of the shooting hand). The rubber griped Standard's safety is noticeably more difficult to operate.
You might want to consider a set of non rubber grips for your BM. Alternatively, you might might try putting a little grease on the grips in the area that contacts the safety.
If that doesn't help, put some grease between the safety and frame (you might want to try this first). As a last resort, you probably could carefully bend the safety lever for more clearance (though I advise against it).

Greg

It's funny you mention rimfire central. I was just thinking before I read the replies that I should post thi question there, too.

I specifically wanted the URX grips, so I won't be replacing those. I don't feel like it's an issue of it hitting the grip, or needing greased. It just feels like it's stiff on the inside. Feels like it's made that way, but I wondered if it would loosen up over time. I'll check it out tomorrow, though, and see if it feels like grease might help.

Thanks for the replies, and also thanks for the welcome.

I've had my Camper for more than ten years. The safety is still pretty stiff to engage, even after many, many rounds. Generally, I flick it off with my right thumb, and engage it with my left thumb.

I think that's how this one will be. I've messed with it quite a bit since I first posted this and can't tell that it's getting any looser. I figure I can learn to live with it as long as it keeps shooting as good as it does now.

I have noticed the same thing and confirmed it with other BM owners.
The safety is stiff.
RFC has a neat trigger spring trick if you're interested.
Since buying the BM, the Rugers stay in the safe.

I've read alot about flipping the spring, but I'm holding off for now. The trigger on mine is pretty good. I may try it out sometime, but for now it's fine.

This is an old thread, but people may be looking at it for a fix so I will just say that chim over at rimfire central explains how the safety works and has great photos. The problem with the BM safeties that are difficult to engage is actually a sear problem. The sear has a V-shaped notch in it. The left leg of the V must be fitted to allow the safety to be raised up behind it. This is done at the factory. But, as everyone knows, there's varying degrees of skill in any profession and those still safeties are the work of the bottom tier. Most of the time, that left leg of the sear can be polished up or have a bit of material removed with emery cloth and then polished and the problem is solved. If you attempt this, beware of removing too much material, as it could cause the safety not to perform it's function.
