BSA red dot - my first impressions

I wanted a very inexpensive red dot so at a recent show
I got a BSA RD42SB (Shadow Black finish). It is a nice red dot for the price
of $40. There is a 12 position (including off) rotary switch to set the dot brightness. The dot is actually
several smaller dots close together (like the elements of
a fiber optic bundle). If you eye is far enough away
is merges into a single dot.

Someone on ar15.com forums said the lens tint of the BSA red dots are too dark for anything but daylight shooting.
I was able to compare both the older RD42 and the newer RD42SB (shadow black) and the RD42 has a noticeably darker lens tint. So if you want the lighter tint look
at the SB variants
