Hello, Clarence. As you know the original 9mm HP is my favorite, but I do have one forty HP. I really don't notice much difference between a full house +P 9mm and the .40 round in terms of recoil. Recoil is subjective and the extra weight of the forty version's slide may help keep felt "kick" down. There is more muzzle flip in my view than with the nine, but keep in mind that none of this is "bad;" we're talking about .40 vs 9mm and not .454 Casull!
The .40 HPs I've seen have been fitted and finished out just as nicely as the nines.
While I'm not real impressed with the grouping ability of some .40 loads and guns, the HP does pretty good with most loads and very well with loads it "likes." This is more a function of ammunition than the gun.
Sights were well regulated from the box on my gun and on two others I've shot. My gun is NOT reliable with Mec-Gar magazines for the .40 HP though my 9mm HPs are. My forty HP must have the Browning magazine even though MecGar makes it! The reason is that the "Browning" mag follower is different than the MecGar. Neither Browning nor MecGar will sell the followers so you have to buy the Browning mags. Mine is the only gun I've seen this to be a problem with.
To me, the forty HP does NOT feel like a HP, but more like a 1911 with a HP grip. I'm not saying it's "bad," just different.
I think you will find the recoil of the forty to be "quicker" or "sharper" than the forty-five but no "heavier". I don't note much difference between it and the Plus P nines so recoil is no problem from this service-size pistol.
Best.
