a local pawn shop has a 1997 browning citori 12 ga... looks jus tlike new... but no box or papers and only has the 2 chokes that are in the barrel. this a completly blue gun chambered for 2 3/4 and 3 " shells. he;s asking 1399.00 and i prob can get it for 1250 out the door... what do you think.. any info will be helpfull

There are several models of Citoris.....which one is it? They made target and field versions, lightweight receivers, pistol grip, POW grip, and English. Barrel length? Where is the top lever - right, center or left? Is it hard to open or does it drop open? Do the ejectors work with authority? Did you check the firing pins to make sure they protrude when fired?

If it is in good condition and a field model, that price seems OK

I have a pair of Browning Citoris, Lightning model, in .20 ga (Grade VI) and .12 ga (Grade III). These guns were purchased in '88-'89 and are still in perfect condition, as tight as when new. Before them I had a pair of Field grade Citoris for about 12-14 years that were also in excellent condition when I replaced them with the upper grade guns. Only difference in the grades is the quality of wood and engraving on the receiver. Internal parts are the same. Based on my experience with Citoris, the gun you are looking at will last your lifetime and still be going strong for your grandson.

ps: You can purchase additional/replacement chokes for the Citori from Jess Briley in Houston. I now use Briley's chokes exclusively in my .20 gauge. They are top quality: http://www.briley.com/

+1 on OneOunce's comments and questions ....

I suspect its a "lightning model" - which is a field configuration stock - and virtually new something around $ 1,250 - $ 1,300 is a fair price.

Here is a link http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=008B&cat_id=013&type_id=129

The Citori Lightning new lists for $ 1950 / sells in my area new for around $ 1,800. A new gun will have 3 chokes with it / all flush mounted / new ones will be invector plus / a gun made in 97 should have invector plus as well. Additional chokes - flush - will cost you about $ 35 / extended chokes like the Midas grade are around $ 50.

I have a variety of Browning O/U's - and the lightning model I have has 28" barrels - bought new in 1988. Its still a solid gun. It isn't my primary gun these days / I've moved to the XS Skeet models ( for hunting, skeet and sporting clays ) - the Lightning has a little too much drop at the comb for me.

thanks for the info guys.. this is a 28" new condition gun ... i have him down to 1150.00 right now. it shoots 2 3/4 and 3" shells pistol handle and does have the invector choke system... i think i'm going to get it...
it just don't have the box or any of the papers.. i guess it does not have any factory warranty.

If it isn't broken, you won't need a factory warranty - it will be out of warranty by the time you need some repairs - but never fear - Browning shotguns are like Chevys or Fords - ANY decent smith will be able to easily get parts and fix it

Have fun with it!
