Could anyone please tell me if the mounting screw on my "Standard" front sight is ASE or metric? If it is metric, what size is it? I'm trying to install Hi-Viz sites and have managed to strip out the hex head. I now need to replace it but have no idea what size it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Go visit a gunsmith for the right thread pitch screw. It is neither USF or metric, it is a special thread pitch used in firearms.

I was able to take it to the machine shop we have at work and they informed me it is a 5-40 thread. You're absolutly correct....that is a strange size. All i have to do not is find a 5-40 bottoming tap!!!!

Thanks for the help.

Again, any gunsmith should have exactly what you are looking for, or you can buy the tools and screws direct from Brownell's or Midway.

Luckily I was able to pick up the proper tap at a local distributor. With a # 39 drill I was able to remove most of the broken screw and chase the remaining threads with the 5-40 bottoming tap. After shortining the mounting screw and using a drop or two of loctite the sight mounted perfectly. The reason I'm going thru all this instead of using a smitty is because he's 45 miles away and I need to shoot tomorrow, we have a improptu club that shoots every Tuesday and I don't want to miss the fun.

Gotcha. You can buy assortments of gunscrews in a little compartmented box from either Midway or Brownells. It's a good thing to keep around.
