Browning Buckmark Question

I have a question for all of you Buckmark owners/shooters...

How often do you remove the slide for cleaning? I ask because the constant removal of the sight base after each and every range session can't ensure a zero'ed pistol each time, can it?

Also, anyone know where an affordable optics mount for the buckmark can be found? $40 is kinda steep on a $200 gun.

Thanks!
Jim

Cleaning your Buck Mark

I used to clean mine every time I shot it. Then I did a test to see how long it would go without any cleaning at all. Went over a thousand rounds with no problems at all.

Now I use a Boresnake after every shooting session and clean the insides with a Q tip. I hardly ever feel the need to dissassemble the gun. Even so, I never notice much change from zero after reassembly. Use the factory washers and blue loc-tite.

Here's a B-square mount for $30

but I never did business with them.

Hope this helps and welcome to TFL.

Regards.

Unlike Ledbetter, my Buckmark does seem to have an aversion to getting dirty. I usually field strip after every other range session, or after a couple of hundred rounds, whichever comes first.

I have not found problems with the zero from reassembly. I think it's a royal nuisance to have to remove the thing for disassembly, but from an accuracy standpoint, I've had no noticeable problems.

I have the Buckmark camper model. I clean it with scubber and a few patches then a light oil wiping after every session (about 200 rounds). I have a problem putting away any gun that's "dirty" from the range.

I take it all the way down after every 1000 rounds or so, give or take a hundred. Yup, it's a lot more complicated than my 1911, but oh so cheap to shoot!

Brownell's has a nice scope/red dot mount for $29 that fits the BuckMark models. I think the brand name was Weigand? Very easy to install on the kitchen table. I put a "cheapie" 30mm BSA Red Dot on it for another $30. and other than the red dot mounting bolts needing a little re-tightening after the first session, no problems.

I looked at the Leupold and other really nice $$$ red dots that a lot of people on this board have high opinions of, but I bought my BuckMark used and had a hard time justifying a $200 plus scope on a $150 gun. I've put maybe 3,000 rounds through it so far with no scope problems.

With a brick of 500 rounds of .22 at $12 it's a really cheap thrill to spend a few hours at the range. Enjoy.

As far as cleaning is concerned, I do the same thing as Ledbetter. I have had mine since they first came out.

I usually just use q-tips with some #9 and clean the breech, feed ramp, chamber and breechface.. that's good enough for a while. After serious use, I dissasemble and completely clean. I notice the screws holding in the top strap doohickey thing tend to work loose after a couple hundred rounds, so it's good to keep the allen key with ya when you do some serious shooting. The POI is quite consistant even after complete dissasembly. I love the pistol... .22 pistols are SO damn fun!

have noticed that it doesn't like ejecting standard velocity .22lr, so I have to use high vel.

Like you I removed the sight assembly the first few times I used the pistol and thought about the sights possibly changing point of impact. One day I had finished shooting and had a can of silicon spray sitting on the bench and the light bulb came on. I locked the slide back, brushed the breech face and then sprayed the slide inners (and the rest of the guts) thouroughly with the silicon spray. Kind of a cheap gun scrubber with lubricating abilities. You can just watch the gunk run out of the pistol, and I don't feel any further lubrication is necessary. It is my new standard method of cleaning the Buckmark. I can confirm that the tightness of the sight mounting screws needs to be confirmed occasionally. On my pistol the front gets loose after about a hundred or so rounds, the rear doesn't.
