Browning BPS Purchase??

I'm considering buying a Browning BPS Hunter 12 ga. I have a Remington 870 now but, being a lefty, I think the bottom eject would be a nice option. It would mostly be used for shooting clays, upland, and maybe with a slug barrel. I also despise the maintainence required on my 870 Express bead-blast finish. Anyone have any experience with the BPS? I looked at one at the gun shop and liked it. What's your opinion?
 
I have a BPS trap model purchased in the early 80s. The gun is very well made and has never had a problem. In my opinion the BPS is the best quality pump made today.
 
I think it is one heck of a gun. I have one that is worked hard, and keeps ticking. They are very well made, and should last a lifetime. My father in law is a lefty and enjoys the bottom eject on his BPS as well.
 
I have the exact same shotgun: BPS Hunter, 12 gauge, 28" barrel. I cannot speak highly enough of it. I'm not a lefty, but I rather like the bottom eject; keeps spent hulls from flying at people next to you if nothing else, less openings for debris to enter, etc. Maintenance of the finish is quite easy, although not having experience with the Remington I can't really make a comparison between the two. I use it for the same purposes, with a little waterfowl hunting thrown in as well, and it works just fine; barrel is a little long for upland, though. I don't have a slug barrel, yet.

Not only do I like it, but my father has a Browning BPS Upland 20 gauge that he loves, and my brother has a Browning BPS 12 gauge (Stalker, I think) that he also loves. Not a Remington amongst the lot of us. ;)

I say get it! I paid around $400 for mine last year, brand new.
 
I have a BPS 20-gauge and I love it. It is smooth, smooth, smooth for a pump. Smooth enough to use at the trap range. Frankly, I don't think that I will buy another pump shotgun. There are autos and such that I still want, but my pump buying days are now over, unless a member of my family wants one...
 
Good for you. The BPS is a fine shotgun. The other option might have been an Ithaca which also botton ejects. I might have argued about the 3 1/2" mag with you, just because they can knock the snot outa you when fired. I shoot a 3" and it is all that I want to shoot and I don't consider me a recoil pansy either. Best of luck and you have a fine shotty coming in soon.
 
The Ithaca is a great shotgun. I used to have an Ithaca "sweet sixteen" until someone else decided that they needed it more than I did.

If I am not mistaken however, the Browning differs from the Ithaca in that it has two pump bars rather than just one, which seems to make for a little better action in my mind. Otherwise, they are basically the same gun.
 
Not really, the only thing they share in common is bottom ejection.

BPS locking system is like the (Auto-5 derived) Rem. 870 or Mossberg 500, with the slide camming a locking bolt in and out of a barrel extension. Ithaca slide cams the rear of the bolt into a notch milled out of the receiver.

BPS has a top tang safety, like the Mossberg 500.

Ithaca 37 receiver is nearly 2" shorter.

BPS is the most finely made and finished pump going. Great machining, great bluing, typical Browning high quality firearm. Feels much smoother than most other pumps out of the box. When they're discontinued someday, because of lackluster sales, people will then suddenly realize how good it was.
