Browning BLR 270 WSM

It depends if you're looking for the most velocity you can get out of that cartridge or you want a quicker, more handy rifle. I shot a 300 WSM with a 22" barrel and while velocity was somewhat less than published, the gun did a fine job both at the range and on game.

Good point there. I like quick handling, which the BLR is, just wondering if velocity will drop off to the point where I'd be better off with a non- magnum caliber. 50-75 fps vs a 24" barrel is not a big deal to me, but much more than that is getting close to the 270 Win or even 7-08. I can't seem to find a definitive answer re. velocity loss.

The WSM's were designed to work better from shorter barrels than conventional magnums. You will lose some speed, but you'll be fine. I've know of exactly 1 person who cut a 300 WSM down to 22" from 24". They lost 70 fps. I'd expect about the same from the 270 version.

Trying to compare results from different rifles is a waste of time. You'll see more difference than that between 2 different guns with equal barrel lengths.

Thanks. So, you think that the 22" barrel will still give me more velocity and muzzle energy than a 270Win and consequently a bit more PBR?

If both have 22" barrels, probably. If the 270 has a 24" barrel vs 22" on the 270 WSM, maybe not.

I've never used either, but looking at my loading manuals I was quite suprised. My manuals show at most 100 fps advantage. Some loads show the best 270 loads within 10 fps of the best 270 WSM loads with 130 and 150 gr bullets. Since I've never actually used either round I have no idea what the "real world speeds" will look like and can only guess.

I own a 300 WSM, 30-06 and 308. I see at least 150 fps and as much as 300 fps advantage with the 300 WSM over the 30-06. As much as 450 fps advantage over the 308 with equal bullet weights. That is enough to to justify owning the 300 WSM. If the 270 WSM doesn't really offer any more advantage than around 50 fps over the older 270, I'm not so sure it is worth it. Maybe someone who actually owns a 270 WSM and has some real world chronograph results will chime in.

At any rate, you own the rifle you own. It may not offer any real advantage over a 270, but that is certainly not a negative. A standard 270 has worked just fine for a long time and the 270 WSM certainly isn't any worse.

I believe it well but as stated above a good chronograph is the only way to prove it.

I don't have the rifle yet. I was wanting to get some feedback first, instead of doing what I usually do, which is buy a rifle THEN ask for feedback.

I've searched the net for info and from what I can see, with a 22" barrel, the WSM does not outperform the Win significantly enough to make it worthwhile, especially since I don't reload and 270 Win is significantly more available than the WSM. I already have several 270 Wins, so if I want the WSM I'll get one with a 24' barrel.

I know a test was done with the 270 Weatherby and when it was shot out of a 22" barrel, the performance figured equalled te 270 Winchester. Magnums are usually figured on a 26" barrel.

Yeah. I was hoping that the Browning would perform some kind of magic and transform the WSM in a shorter barrel, but it is not to be. I have a Tikka 7mm Rem Mag that I'm sure will perform well enough for me for longer ranges. It has a 24 3/8" barrel, and I'm thinking I might lose 50-70fps compared to a 26" barrel, but it is still enough to perform well out to 400+ yds, which is farther than I'll probably ever shoot at a game animal anyway.

While I was researching the BLR, I came across reviews for this rifle chambered in 358Win.(I already have one in 7mm-08), and based on what has been said about this combination, I simply must have one.

I really want a 375 H&H magnum simply because of the history and it was JOC Africa gun. I have no use for that big caliber where I live but will still get one some day for fun.

I'm right there with ya, Mystro. I have a Blazer in 9.3x62 just because. I was going to get a .375 Ruger for the same reason, but will definitely get a .375 H&H because of the history behind it.

Those big old thumpers, from what I've read on this and other forums, actually cause less meat damage in CX2 game than the higher velocity smaller caliber rounds. I'm going to try it out for myself.

I have a 9.3x64 Brenneke on a custom Springfield action converted to have a left hand bolt though it still feeds right hand.

Why you might ask? The Springfield was simply the cheapest host available at the time with old school claw controlled feed which is the most reliable bolt action and preferred on an African rifle that might be used for dangerous game. The action is of course medium length for the original .30-06 round. The 9.3x64 Brenneke is short enough to work with this action and yet still deliver .375 H&H magnum power and ballistics. RWS makes a good variety of ammo including some with steel jacket for elephant hunting. I killed an erland with it back in 1986 in Tanzania.
