Browning BDM 9MM Problems

First time poster and long time lurker -

I need some insight from the force, please:

I have a Browning BDM 9mm that had some FTE problems and I fixed those with a new recoil spring and extractor.

Now it won't fire on the first pull, being double action on the first shot and single action afterwards in P (pistol) mode or in R (revolver) mode, and the hammer down.

Not even a primer strike on the round when trying to fire in double action mode.

Single action is flawless, no problems as the FTE has been fixed.

That's where I'm at now. Not sure what parts are the culprit(s).

Thanks all!

Not up on my BDMs...

Did you have to take the slide apart to replace the extractor? Something changed/didn't get put back together correctly on the "fix".

Something obvious, Is it locking forward? completely closed after you rack it. If the slide is the slightest bit back the hammer won't fire. Its probably not this and you would probably have noticed.

Also, The BDM hammer on double action doesn't start falling near as far back as on single action. The single action might be falling forward with just enough force to set the primer off, but the double action is not. To fix it get a new hammer spring. The firing pins on BDM's are the forward inertia type; when the hammer is set completely down it doesn't actually touch the back of the firing pin. It relies on the inertia from the hammer to launch the firing pin into the primer. This means that even if the firing pin is its full correct length the hammer spring needs to be strong enough to launch it forward. This feature was intended to prevent impact discharge when the hammer was down.

Also Brewmonkey, interesting some of the prior issues you had.
I used to have serious issues for years with my BDM (BPM-D). Mine was ejecting fine but would get half jammed up on the top of the new cartridge case every shot. It was also worse when I shot it offhand (more limpwristed than a rest). I sorta came to the conclusion that the slide wasn't recoiling far enough back to pick up the new cartridge. I began using grease in the slide and got a lighter recoil spring. It worked great for a while, but then started failing to eject. I put the old heavier spring back in and ever since then the gun has worked perfectly. I like my BDM a lot, but I'm still puzzled by it.
