browning a5

i just inherited a browning a5, and don't know much about the model. it has a 28 inch barrel and takes 3inch shells, and says mag. is there a 3inch mag? I am not very knowledgable on shotguns, so break it down barney style:)

Shotgun

Sir:
Shotshells for shotguns typically are 2 3/4, 3 or 3 1/2 inches long.
2 3/4 was a standard for many years and more recently in last 20 years or so
Shotguns chamber for 3 in or even 3 1/2 have become popular

It appears your gun will accept 3 in shells it will also shoot 2 3/4 shells
It will not shoot 3 1/2 shells.

The a5 is a recoil operated shotgun, that is the barrel is moved to eject and chamber the next round with gas expelled from the first shot moving the barrel backwards and a spring returning the barrel for the next shot.

They are fine shotguns and were for a century the field gun of choice for millions of hunters

Thank you very much for the info. I am entrances by the gun, it being in great condition and my first shotgun. Any other info would be welcome. Thanks again.

You can download a manual for it and date it by the serial number at the Browning website http://www.browning.com/services/index.asp

There are friction rings on the outside of the magazine tube that must be adjusted to match the power of the load that you are using. Having the gun set for heavy loads while shooting light loads will do no harm, but the shells won't eject or feed right. Having the gun set for light loads while shooting heavy loads will cause excess stress and wear on the gun.
The manual will tell you how to properly set the gun up for the loads you are using.

A little background on the history

The Auto-5 was the first working semiautomatic shotgun design. John Moses Browning considered it to be his greatest design, and he had a bunch including among other things the Colt .45, Winchester 97, the BAR, and M2 .50 Cal machinegun. It is a long recoil design, using the kinetic energy of recoil to power the operation of the gun. It is not gas operated in any way (as mentioned in an earlier post) As the A5 was originally developed in the era of black powder gas operation would have problematic. It is best known for remaining operational despite hard use, neglect and adverse conditions of temp, dirt, water or ice.

The Auto-5 was first marketed in 1903 and was manufactured for Browning by Fabrique Nationale in Liege Belgium. The gun was in continuous production for almost 100 years, with a couple of timeouts for world wars and the Nazi occipation of Belgium. The gun was so good that it saw almost no changes in those 100 years. The principle changes were the addition of a Magazine cut off, the 2 piece lifter and a cross block safety. It was produced in 12, 16 and 20 ga, with regular and light versions and Mag, (3" chamber) in both 12 and 20 ga.

The manufacturing was moved from Belgium (FN) to Japan (Miroku) in the mid 70's. Around 2 1/2 million A5's were made. In addition the Remington Model 11 and Savage 720 were based on the John Browning patents.

Your gun was known as the Mag Twelve and was introduced in 1958. It remained in production until the Auto-5 was discontinued in the late '90s

Enjoy it, it is a timeless classic.
