I have inherited a Browning A5, Japanese manufactured, that I would like to use for trap. In my older age I have become recoil sensitive. Is there a friendly, softer set up,such as lighter spring ?? My trap loads will typically be from Walmart, Federal 2-3/4" 3 dram, 1-1/8 ounce,#8 shot. Is there such a thing as a soft reciting A5....thanks, Jeff.

The A-5 has a very distinctive recoil feel. The unit operates by having the entire barrel move back upon firing to cycle the action

There are 2 settings for the friction ring based on the type of ammo you are shooting. If you don't have an owners manual, Google it and ensure your ring and spring are set correctly for light loads.

That won't really lighten the felt recoil, but will make sure the gun is functioning correctly.

Order new friction bronzes and steel rings plus ...

a new recoil spring.
Detal the OD of mag tube so it's SMOOTH and clean.

Follow the rings setting using the tota required for your model [the Mag uses two bronzes and three steel, then Std uses two each] Browning website has electronic copies for download plus the parts list. SN will be needed.

Other forums poster have indicated that light polishing of the mag tube OD with 600 grit paper MAYBE needed.

Also to help cycling small drop of Mobil 1 may help.

May need to contact browning itself or locate a service center to assist.

If your shotgun is in original condition, may I respectfully suggest that you do not ruin the gun by putting a recoil pad on it. Auto-5s are becoming collectable.
Instead, use a shooting jacket with padded shoulders. You may also slide a recoil boot onto the stock. MyA5s were a bit unpleasant shooting slugs but skeet loads shouldn't be too bad.
