Browning A-bolt s/s stalker .270 winchester

Hi all, Im after any info on the browning stalker to do with getting the ultimate accuracy from factory ammo. So far I have used a variety of brands & bullet weights but I am still not happy with the groupings.
Hornady SST 140gr is the best so far but still cant get within 2 inch groups at 100metres.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
 
Aside from handloads my 270 has always liked Winchester 130 gr. silver tips(not the ballistic silvertips) and 130 gr. Remington Core-Lokt soft points. I can usually get 1 1\2 groups off a good rest with either one. I have some handloads that will do better, but as far as factory ammo goes, those shoot the best for me. BTW my rifle is a Remington 78 Sportsman in 270 win.
 
Good benchrest? Proper use of sandbags and all that?

If so, it might be time to mess around a bit with the forearm bedding. That commonly helps. Free-float the barrel, first. I like to add a little shim out at the forearm tip, to act as a bit of a vibration damper. I make my shims of kitchen wax paper, folding a 3/4" strip back and forth until it's just thick enough. (Wax paper won't absorb moisture; no rust.) Just barely enough force on separating the forearm and barrel to allow insertion. About a five-pound pull.

Sasquatch, have already tried federal premium v/shok 150gr nostler balistic tips. Do you think the partition will travel any differently in the same bullet weight??
Any thoughts on the trophy bond or the barnes projectiles?

I reload for my Model 70 .270, and have found the 150 gr. Partitions to be the most accurate in my rifle. I started with the Federal Premium ammo, and found out that my rifle like them, so I started reloading those bullets myself.

For some reason the Ballistic Tips don't shoot as well in this rifle, but I have a Ruger .270 which shoots the 140 gr. version very well.

Any thoughts on the trophy bond or the barnes projectiles?

Haven't tried the Trophy Bonded, and the Barnes bullets caused me a lot of grief in the way of copper fouling.
 
I have an Winchester mod 70 featherweaight that really likes the 135gr sierra match bullets with AA3100 powder. half inch groups are easy with that load. Some people will flame me for using match bullets to hunt with but I never lost a deer with that load!

The factory load I don't like is the Winchester 130gr silver tip. Them damn bullets explode on impact. They may be ok for a 100lb deer. A 200lb deer? forget it!

Most factory loads these days are almost just as good as hand loads. Practice and practice more. You will be ok with factory loads. The key is to practice:). Can't go wrong with a 270. It's a damn good cartridge!

Try This...

You may very likely go through QUITE a bit of ammo trying to shrink your groups, as we all know, and factory ammo is expensive and "run of the mill". 1st suggestion, save your brass. There are guys that custom load ammo all over the country, and may be able to help you. Why keep your brass??? Because they've already been fired in YOUR chamber, and neck sizing only (after proper trimming/chamfer/debur) leaves the fireformed shape to the case that's been fired in your chamber, better centering the reloaded cartridge to your bore. This almost always will shrink your groups.

I am a .270 Win. fan, myself. I have a Browning A-Bolt Synthetic/Stainless Stalker in that cartridge (LOVE the rifle!!!), which is receiving a Douglas Air Gauge #4 as we speak.

Anyway, I would suggest either talking to some1 you know that handloads, or hunt for Loaders of Custom Ammo, but SAVE YOUR BRASS!!!!

Try that, you WILL NOT be disappointed.
 
I have an abolt Stalker in 30-06, and I exclusively use Winchester Silvertips and Winchester Supreme Partition Golds for deer and elk respectively. I get MOA or a little less. But the groups are consistent. Looks like Abolts love Winchester.

Don't know about that one... My Abolt Stalker 308 loves Federal Classic and Premium, I've already got some Classic on hand for when my 7mm Medalion finally gets here! :D
