Browning 9mm HiPower Magazines

I have owned a Browning Hi Power in the past and like an idiot sold it along with 6 or 8 (I have blocked it from my memory) Pre-Ban 13 round magazines. Well I am in the market for another Hi Power and am trying to overcome the magazine problem. I refuse to carry a 13 round gun with only 10 rounds on pure principal. I have found a source for MecGar pre-ban magazines for a reasonable price. Does anyone know anything about these as compared to the Browning factory ones. Do they hold 13 as well? I thought I read somewhere that they hold 15. If so, do they still fit flush? Should I get the MecGars or hold out til I find some Browning factory ones?

Mecgars and factory hicaps both work well for me. Get some of both. But given a choice, I'll take factory mags.

Try CDNN for mags. Their website lists 13rd mecgars for $40, and 20rd mecgars for $50. A recent catalog listed some factory 13rd mags for $70, but I don't see those listed on their website.

MecGar is the "factory" magazine

They manufacture the mags that come with HPs today as well as those sold prior to 9/94.

Give the SA miltary 17 rd ones a try too. CDNN has them for 19 a pop. very reliable for me, basepad adds about 3/8 in.

Are you certain that mecgar uses Browning quality standards and specs when producing mags for sale with their own markings on them? I am not certain of that.

Like I said, they are good mags, though.

BTW, Hipowers have been in production over 60 years now. I don't think mecgar has made all Hipower mags during that period.

Novak`s has 3 Mec Gars for $105 + shipping.

I have 3 of them plus some factory and some 17 rounders from CDNN. All are very reliable. I also have about 10 Mec Gars for my .40 Browning.

Does anyone really think MecGar would ruin their reputation by making cheap mags?

It wouldn't make sense for them to have an inferior line for their own label, either,
as this is additional tooling costs.

I also doubt they've made mags for the BHP for the last 60 years.

I've got several no-name mags marked only with"Belgium."

Mec-Gar

Mec-Gar has made the OEM magazines that come with the Browning Hi-Power since at least 1990. That's per Mec-Gar and Browning.

I've found some earlier factory magazines that appear to be Mec-Gar manufactured as well (marked "Made in Italy" or "Italy/9mm NATO/Luger") but they predate the time that MecGar indicates that they began manufacturing OEM mags for Browning.

I live in California so I can't get the hi-cap but I picked up some pro mags the other day. Is this a good magazine?

CLOG:

Mec-Gar makes some of the best mags available.

As noted, they are OEM for Browning. They are also OEM for Beretta, one of several for CZ and EAA Witness, and OEM for S&W and H&K. I'm sure there are others. Mec-Gar is now the SOLE OEM for SIG. Taurus and Kel-Tec use them, too.

Made to Browning quality? A better question to ask is, "are the old Browning mags as good as the new Mec-Gar ones now made for Browning?"

Mec-Gar is OEM for Walther as well.
Per my latest Mec-Gar packaging, they have been making magazines since 1965.
The Mec-Gar branded Sig P228 10 round magazines are FAR superior in fit and finish than the Sig German mfg. factory 10 round mags that came with my pistol.

ProMag is hit or miss, usually a miss.

The Hi Power mags that I had in the past did not have the little spring thing on them!

to dinosaur:

Do the MecGar mags you got from Novak's have the little spring thing that helps eject the mag?

to all:

If you have the mag disconnect safety removed, do you need the little spring thing on the mags to achieve a drop-free effect?

The spring is only on the Browning brand mags and then only on the 10rd mags.

The spring was introduced on the .40 mags and later on the 9mm mags.

My mags do not have the spring and they all drop free from my Hi-Power.

Sundance, AFAIK what DMSC says is true.

My factory mags on my .40 all have the springs. The Mec Gars don`t. Before the mag safety was removed the springs were necessary. Now they come out like a rocket!

None of my 9`s have the springs including the ones from Novak`s.

Anyone have contact info for Novak's?

His web site has non-functional links to his ordering page and his ph# got me some lady who had no idea what I was talking about.

Found another #, but no answer.

"The spring is only on the Browning brand mags and then only on the 10rd mags."

What's this? A difference between factory mags and mecgars? How can this be?

I bought 2 15 round Mec-Gar mags for my BHP. They are better than the factory mags in my opinion. I have a nickel HP and got the stainless mags. Flawless!
