Browning .22 Auto Rifle

Knowledgeable friends:
I was recently shooting the rifle and suddenly it developed occasional ejection problems. I thought it was probably dirt, but when I tore it down I discovered the extractor hook was broken off. :( I ordered new parts from Browning and they are easily installed but I am wondering if something could have been done to prevent it.
The rifle is over 40 years old and but has been used only moderately. I take it down and clean it about every 500 rounds. Enough? Or do those extractors just get tired after a while? Since I use only cheap hi-speed promo ammo, I got to thinking if the rifle is designed to also use regular speed, then the recoil spring is a little light when firing hi speed stuff. True? Thanks!

You have hit on a common problem. Most of the old .22 Auto's (rifles and pistols) are designed to shoot the standard velocity ammo. Although this would seem that it is not relevant to the ejector problem, those that I have repaired with that problem, were using the Hi Speed stuff. After repair the problem was eliminated.
