brown bear and other tasty animals????

Hello,

They say there is no such thing as a "stupid question", but rather stupid people asking dumb questions...lol

Well, here is my dumb question....

As a new hunter (living in Northern Ontario), I intend on hunting black bear. I have had bear roast and sausage on a few different occasions and have loved it. I also love eating moose and deer.

For those who hunt "brown bear - grizzly" in the West Coast area, do you actually eat the bear as well? or is it for a "trophy" only? Also, if you do eat the brown bear...does it actually taste similar to a black bear...(altgough varies on what the animal is eating I suppose).

A broader question then...I have eaten Bison, Deer, Moose etc.... What does Elk / caribou like...similar to any of these? Does a wild Boar tatse similar to say a farm raised pigs? I have heard a few different people joke that the chinese have it right on..as **cat (bobcats) tatste phenominal. Anyone have cougar or such...? Don't know if any regulations (trapper's license) or etc. prevent one form eating these game animals or not.

In one of the books i am currently reading, the african guide states that the impala (antelope) is sought after but it tastes like bubble gum, fat and marbles mixed together. Sounds gross! A buddy of mine is from the East Coast of Canada, he really loved hunting seals, used a 22 or small rifle. He loved the taste of a seal...?? Blubberiffic I suppose...lol

I know this is a rookie question..lol, Although I dream of it, I probrably won't be hunting anything other than white-tails and Black bears in my neck of the woods. just wondering??

Curiosity never killed the cat...but my 30-06 could!

Elk and caribou are awesome. A lot like deer, but not exactly the same. Lean, tasty meat.

Seal and whale are real nice also, but I've only tried them once. It's not something you see much of in a landlocked state like mine, but I'm sure somebody here chows down often.

Never eaten a big bear, but if they are as good as the small ones, sign me up.

Wild and feral pigs taste a lot different than farm pork. Stronger flavor, less fat. Delicious if you cook it right, though. Top notch grub.

Never had cat, but I'm game if the opportunity presents itself. I've heard it's real tasty from quite a few folks and I'll try anything.

Mmmmmmmmm... kitties.:D

"Cats are your friends, not food," read the banners carried at a demonstration last week at the Guangzhou train station, where protesters were trying to intercept a shipment of cats.

Friends, food... Why not both?:D

I saw a similar article a few days ago that quoted a Chinese saying that went something like: "The Cantonese will eat anything that flies except airplanes, and anything with legs except chairs"

They sound like my kind of people.

I have eaten a lot of wild hog.
Best meat on God's Green Earth.
It is a lot like domestic pork, but has a lot less fat.
If I had a shot at a 150 sow, I would let an 8 pointer walk.

Give me a ham from a wild hog on the smoker, and a bag of mesquite chips, I would be in heaven.

Elk and Caribou are very good, but I like Moose best.

My daughter-in-law is from Guangzhou (Canton) and she claims cat is pretty gamey tasting, but dog is milder. Never tried them myself.

Amen to that pelican!!! Wild hog is one of the ones at the top of my list and the first to fill my freezers every year. Concur with Elk and Caribou, never had moose or bear, but my buddy loves it. My dad said that cat, "prison camp food fare" WWII Germany, was sweet and tasted like coon which I love. Gotta know how to prepare and cook it. You can eat just about anything if you put your mind to it. Your taste will decide if you will try it again, I am sure of it. Venison I crave for and usually get my limit every year here to boost the freezers. Good luck with whatever you try, and just try it yourself ONCE. You like, go back for seconds then shoot another.
Ken:)

Elk, deer, moose=great. I make a lot of cube steak out of the lesser steak type cuts..excellent chicken fried steak w/ gravy. Dang, now I'm hungry again. I have had mountain lion in ham form. Like tender pork. Had some barbeque down in Arkansas one time, Might have been german shepherd but good.

I'd personally put Elk way up there on my list, second only to Dall Sheep. Caribou is pretty good, makes great sausage. Brown bear though:barf: I haven't tried it but I'e heard they are no good. Most of the summer they'll have a wierd fishy taste (wonder why:rolleyes:)
