Broken chrono ...

A friend of a friend had a funny (sort of) experience today. Some local good guys offered to let him try out their FAL's at the range. He bought some ammo as part of his contribution to the effort.

They were testing some surplus ammo, so during the break, one FAL owner set up his chronograph. His FAL has a scope, apparently mounted on some kind of flattop mount.

Well, things went awry. This friend of a friend had never fired this fellow's rifle before, and he had never before used a chrono. As he sighted in on the target, he said he checked down in the scope, and made sure he would definitely miss the chrono. Unfortunately, no one told him the scope's height from the bore required much more clearance. And, apparently the rifle / chrono owner didn't check the height of the chrono when he set it up. They were shooting off bags or some other fixed / solid mount.

So, this friend of a friend is going to buy the rifle / chrono owner a new chrono, because, as you can imagine ... the shot apparently took off the top of the chrono.

I think it is decent for this guy to buy him a new chrono, but I'm a little surprised the chrono / rifle owner isn't taking any responsibility for this problem. And, this friend of a friend is not even complaining about it ... he just mentioned it when my buddy asked how he liked the FAL's. [We're talking about a $100+ chrono, so this isn't a major deal.]

I just wondered what you folks think.

Tell your frind that Shooting Chrony (if that's the brand that was shot) will rebuild the chronos for a fee that's less than a new one.
