Bringing in newbies

Almost two months ago, I met this amazing, wonderful young woman. We started dating and I got her convinced that she should try coming to the pistol range with me, just to see what it's like. We've been there together twice and I'm keeping her (she can't legally keep ammo since she doesn't have a gun permit) .22LR CCI Stingers for her until she can come with me to shoot again. :) (She likes shooting the Stingers over any of the less recoiling / less loud stuff. Pretty soon she'll probably be shooting with full-house .357 Magnums or something... :D)

Anyway, during my teaching her about the fundamentals of shooting I realised something: It's much more difficult than you'd imagine. (Maybe I'm just not cut out to teach?) I did make sure she understood the rules about safety, but some of the shooting stuff I had trouble with. (I forgot to explain to her how to properly aim with the darn thing, for crying out loud... Somehow I must have just assumed everyone knew how to do it. :p Of course, that mistake was corrected quite fast. :D) Now, someone from my school also wants to try shooting pistols. I'd like to avoid at least some of the errors that I did earlier, and maybe further explain a few things about guns I either might have forgotten to tell my girlfriend or what she didn't get. (I'm an Engineer student, so it might be possible that I may have tried to explain some things a tad too difficultly... :))

So, are there any good sources of basic firearm information on the Internet? I'm talking about safety, how guns work, and also how to shoot with them. Hopefully someone out there knows how to explain this stuff to beginners better than I do... :p Animations, pictures and such would be most welcome.

(And no, buying a book or a video is out. These people will not spend a lot of money in starting something if they don't know do they like it yet. Plus we're all students, and so not too rich... ;))

I agree with the advice about the NRA class or private lessons from an NRA instructor. Teaching someone shooting is sometimes like teaching someone to drive. You know perfectly well how to do it, but you don't necessarily know how to teach it. Besides it can sometimes lead to unpleasant arguments (I know teaching driving can.)

Now for the "however". This is a good topic, but more appropriate for the General Discussion forum. Look for it there...

[Meanwhile, a couple of hours later.]
I've reopened this here because the move didn't work. It looks like UBB is up to its old tricks again.

I don't think there too many NRA instructors in Finland. So that route can not be taken.

Tony is going to need something that he can down load and/or print from the net.

Tony - You just described TFL. Post your questions here and you WILL get well informed answers.

If you're looking for existing material, all I can suggest is that you fire up a search engine and start slogging.

Google is a good place to start, but be prepared for LOTS of links.

For a meta engine try, try Dogpile

Have fun. :)

Cliff, I meant more like a collection of info, not looking trough the vast amount of posts here at TFL to find bits and pieces. I need a "package" to give to new shooters so they have the basic information before heading out to the range. (If these people become interested in shooting, I will point them in this direction, have no worry... ;)) I did find www.m1911.org , they had a nice explanation of how the SA pistol works, complete with a good animation. Still leaves the DA and DAO unexplained, though. (Well, that much even I should be able to explain without messing things up too much. :) But then there's the striker-fired guns, especially my Walther P99 with it's DA hammerless design with three different trigger modes that seems to be difficult to new shooters to understand.)

Still no explanation of correct shooting stances or a good list of safety rules, any of that stuff. (I do know how to do a web search, but going trough all the links can be time-consuming. I was hoping someone else had allready gone trough this and knew the good links allready... ;) Oh well. I'll post links to what I find if you guys want to.)
