Bringing a firearm into the U.S. and Kalifornia

A question for all you wise men

I am going to South Africa in December, and the South African currency is collapsing, so here's my question.

If I purchase a firearm (probaly a handgun) there, what are the problems getting back to the US. If I purchase a handgun, I can have one of my friends or relatives send it to my home address when I get home. Should I have them ship it in pieces or as a single unit. Will I have to register the handgun when I get home. With the current currency collapse, I may be able to purchase a nice firearm, for a very cheap price.

Thanks in advance

You should be directing your question towards the U.S. Customs Service and the BATF. They would have the necessary forms and permits to import a firearm legally into the United States. If you choose not to do that, then I don't think your question is appropriate for this forum.

Hi pittspilot,
For U.S Citizens to bring firearms into this country, there is a procedure to be followed. You will need to get permission from the Office of Defensive Trade Controls, their website: www.pmdtc.org

The other and possibly easier thing for you to do would be to go to the store in S.Africa and select the firearm and have the store hold it for you, then you can come back and contact a FFL dealer and have him import the same handgun for you. This may be slightly more expensive considering the shipping, and the FFL's charges, but it will be hassle free, compared to importing it yourself.

By the way you can't just ship it from S.Africa to the USA, since importing of weapons have to go through customs, and there are certain criteria to be met, like weight, barrel length, safety features etc.

Good Luck to you on this.

Thanks anand, I appreciate the input.

Bruels, I do not appreciate the inference that I was doing something illegal, or looking for hints on how to do things illegally. The question regarding shipping, had more to do with insuring that if the gun is shipped that it will not fall into the wrong persons hands. A quick overview of my comments would suggest that I am looking for a legal way to do this and asked these questions as a way of avoiding legal landmines.

Actually never mind, as I have finally found South Africa's gun laws, and my chances of buying one there and then getting it here are possible, but not nearly worth the hassle. Even for significant savings in money
