PITTSBURGH -- The chief deputy in the Allegheny County Sheriff's department was indicted by a federal grand jury Monday morning for an alleged scheme involving supposed bribes and campaign contributions.
According to the indictment, Dennis Skosnik, 54, of North Fayette, faces the following charges:
* Wire fraud
* Mail fraud (two counts)
* Theft or bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds (five counts)
* Money laundering (three counts)
* Tampering with a witness, victim or informant
The indictment alleges that Skosnik took several thousand dollars from an unidentified person who was trying to establish a privately run, for-profit facility that could house prisoners, as an alternative to the Allegheny County Jail.
Skosnik also received tickets to a Las Vegas show and a Pittsburgh-Miami college football game, the indictment said.
Also, the indictment accuses Skosnik of pressuring other employees in the sheriff's office to support Sheriff Pete DeFazio's re-election efforts, and threatening those who didn't buy tickets to DeFazio's fundraising events.
Though DeFazio is referenced by name in the indictment, he has not been charged.
Abuses of power by Skosnik are also alleged in the indictment, including:
* Fixing a DUI case that a prominent local businessman was facing.
* Fixing parking tickets.
* Having other employees do landscaping work at his house and transport his son back and forth to school in Philadelphia.
* Checking on vehicle tag information and giving it to unauthorized individuals.
More details will be announced at an afternoon news conference in U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan's office.
