Breaking News! Gov of Tex wants to Arm the TEACHERS! WOOHOO!!!!

My girlfriend just called out that the Govenor of Texas (the lady who's parents were killed at Lubys and got TX CCW moving) has called for the arming of teachers at schools!

She (my girlfriend) also said that the Gov was pushing for legislation right now, citing what we've been saying all along: Schools are targets because nobody is armed there!

If this is true, talk about a step in the right direction!!!!

Gov of texas??

I thought George W. Bush was the Govorner of Texas?

At any rate, that sounds like an impossible, but great idea!

State Rep. is her position. Had been a doctor. Can't think of her name. Sure sign of old age. :D

She should be sure to mention she's 'doing it for the children'. Might be the first time in years that, when spoken by a politician, it would be the truth.

I can't confirm that the Texas Gov. and the State Rep. made the statements about arming teachers, but FYI, the State Rep. you are refering to is Suzanna Gratia Hupp. She watched as her parents were gunned down in Luby's. She had left her handgun in the car because she was fearful of loosing her medical license.

On this topic a friend of mine sent me the following clipping from the 4/23 "Austin American-Statesman." This newspaper is usually anti-gun, so the article is a surprise. The title of the article is "Hupp: Arming Teachers Might Deter Violence"

"This week's deadly school shooting in Colorado has Rep. Suzanna Gratia Hupp wondering whether Texas teachers and school officials need to be armed.

"Hupp, R-Lampasas, is a second-term House member. Her parents were killed in the 1991 shootings in a Killeen Luby's, where a gunman killed 24 people before killing himself. Hupp was at the restaurant at the time and said had she been allowed to take her gun inside she might have saved lives. The incident prompted Hupp to lobby for a concealed-carry law and was part of her bid for office in 1996.

"Hupp on Thursday said she thinks allowing teachers and aides and other school officials to be armed would be a deterrent against school violenbce. It also could allow teachers to lessen the harm done by such violence if it occurred. But Hupp said she probably won't push the idea because too many colleagues would be against it.

"Hupp said when Israeli teachers and aides were required to be armed years ago, terrorism in their schools plummeted.

"'Our schools are "gun-free," Hupp said. 'You see how well that works.'

"While Hupp said she's unlikely to push a teacher-gun proposal, she is considering sending her children to private schools that allow teachers to carry guns.

"'I don't think that would be a guarantee (against violence), but that would be a deterrent,' she said."

I understand that under present Texas law, concealed handgun licensees must leave their guns in the parking lot when entering any educational institution. I don't think Hupp is talking about the special arming of teachers--just allowing any concealed handgun licensees among them to carry their regular guns into the schools with them.

As Hupp says, a lot of people oppose her idea. But, to me, the opposition is emotional instead of rational. What right-minded person would not wish that the teacher in the library at Columbine H.S. had been armed? I wonder if the urban pacifists opposing Hupp's idea just don't trust teachers, besides hating guns.

True, sometimes just having a gun will resolve the situation in a positive manner. However, with determined adversaries, or the truly wacko, one WILL be forced to perform the indicated response. Only with competent training, continuous practice and, most importantly, A COMBAT MINDSET, will one prevail over the assault of the feral predator. You only have to look as far as the poor fool of a Deputy at Littleton, CO to see how just being "armed" ain't enough when lead is flying your way and lives hang in the balance. Stay safe.

Ufortunately, I don't think this is true about Gov. Bush. In fact he has just shown his true colors by coming out on the side of Slick Willy and Hillary Clinton by backing the ban on private firearm sales at gun shows. Get a load of this...

It has been reported around Texas and the Nation, that
Governor George Bush has decided to embarrass Texans.
The Houston Chronicle reported:

AUSTIN - Gov. George W. Bush, in the wake of the Colorado
school shooting last week, endorsed a controversial gun
control proposal that had been killed only hours earlier
by a Texas House committee. The panel chairman, who voted
against the bill, said the governor had never told him he
supported it. Bush's statement also surprised supporters
of the measure, which would require instant criminal
background checks of people buying firearms from unlicensed
sellers at gun shows. The House Public Safety Committee
rejected Danburg's gun show bill, House Bill 1199, late
Tuesday night, the same evening that news of the school
shooting in Littleton, Colo., which left 15 people dead,
was rocking the country. Rep. Bob Turner, D-Coleman,
chairman of the House Public Safety Committee, said the
governor's post-Littleton comments were "a bit of a
knee-jerk reaction probably." "To this moment, the
governor has never talked to me about the bill," said
Turner, who voted against the measure.

http://www.goa-texas.org/pub-saf-1.htm

We appreciate the entire Public Safety Committee, and
especially Rep. Bob Turner for taking the heat, and
standing for the 2nd amendment.

It is interesting to note that there was NO communication
that Governor Bush was in favor of Rep. Danburg's gun show
bill. That is, until it was time to play politics, after
the horrific tragedy in Colorado. This, after the Public
Safety committee vote represented the peoples will in
Texas by defeating Danburg's anti-gun show bill!

This was a critical point, where Governor Bush could have
made Texans proud that he is our Governor, and a POSSIBLE
PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER. And, we had really hoped that since
he had signed our CHL law in 1995, that he would stand
firm NOW.

Now, we see the real Governor George Bush of Texas. NOW the
question is: What will he do if he becomes President??

You know, Senator Bob Smith is looking better every day
for the Republican Presidential nomination. Senator Smith
stood firm against the NICS background checks, and tried
to stop the FBI from keeping a list of the names of gun
owners. And this was against all odds! Go to

this issue.

THIS IS WHEN WE FIND OUT IF GOVERNOR BUSH IS THE MAN WE
NEED FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. EVEN IF YOUR NOT
A TEXAN, THERE STANDS THE CHANCE THAT THIS MAN MAY BE
YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT. PLEASE HELP US WITH THE ITEMS BELOW:

Interestingly, Congressional leaders from both parties
in D.C. are not enthusiastic about the Clinton anti-gun
proposals. Even Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle
said: "I'm not sure that gun legislation is what we
need."

Some reporters have tied that reluctance, and Clinton's
reluctance to push for broader measures, to the switch
from Democrat to Republican control of both houses in
1994, which Clinton publicly stated was due to Democrat
votes for the "assault weapons ban."

Governor Bush needs to know your immense dissatisfaction
in his "knee-jerk reaction" regarding Rep. Danburg's HB 1199.

Let him know the same voting power that brought about the
defeat of the anti-gunners in Washington D.C. back when
the assault weapons ban & Brady bill was passed, is alive
and well in Texas, and we would much rather use our
influence in his Presidential nomination. Let him know
that his financial lead in his Presidential quest could
easily dry up by alienating the pro-gun vote. Remember,
it was Bill Clinton who declared why many of his own
party were no longer with him, after the Republican
sweep. He credited the Gun Lobby! Remember to temper
your conversation with a bit of "diplomacy". Rude and
hateful comments will only set us back.

But he must renounce his support for Danburg's anti-gun
show ban!

Also, remind him of bills in Calendars Committee: HB 1020,
HB 1021, HB 1035, HB 1165 HB 1776, HB 2240, HB 2323 just
to name a few. Tell him to prove to us that he is on our
side by using his influence on the Calendars committee to
pass these pro-gun bills!

You may also have him prove his worth by having him use
his influence in pressing the Criminal Jurisprudence
committee for hearing on HB 3398, Vermont carry for Texas!
