Breaking in a Rifle

I've got my fingers crossed that Christmas will bring me my first rifle. I've been researching different models and noticed that people often mention shooting a couple of hundred rounds to 'break it in' and help smooth out the action.

Do they make dummy rounds that could be used to do this or do I have to use live rounds?

The dummy rounds would help smooth the action , but it`ll take live fire to break in the bore .
Most new rifles and pistols it will take 200 to 300 rounds for things to settle in .

The worst enemy of a new barrel is rapid fire overheating of the barrel. When you get your new rifle, it will probably shoot 1 1/2" groups a 100 yards, right out of the box. This is fine for hunting. If you are a paper puncher, and want to shoot quite a bit, just remember to take your time at the range, and let the barrel cool down every 2 or 3 rounds.
You will want to shoot several kinds of ammo through the rifle to find out what it likes to eat, and then stay with that ammo. Then you can be assured that the rifle will get more accurate, with every shot, just as you will.
