breaking in a new rifle

I took my new Bushmaster to the range and it is jamming everyone round and won't extract properly. My friend told me this is normal because the recoil spring is new. I have not experienced this type of failures to extract on my Colt Sporter. It's fairly frustrating having a jam every round and I gave up trying to "break-in" after 100 rounds or so. Can someone shed some lights on so called "breaking-in" period for new rifles? Thank you!

Send it back to Bushmaster. They will correct it free of charge minus shipping. I have never had a mech problem with a Bushmaster, new or not.

There really is no break-in period for an AR-15 type rifle. Bushmasters are normally very reliable out-of-the-box. As George said, it could be a headspacing problem or it could be an ammo problem. If you have tried more than one type of ammo and had the same results, then take FireForged's advice and call Bushmaster for a UPS pick-up and let them sort it out.

If the first round out of a AR does not work right you have a bum gun. There is no Brake In on one, it works or needs fixed. Bad ammo will cause them to be snotty though.

The type of problem you have is not break-in related. Break-in is a barrel issue involving cleaning, shooting, cleaning, shooting... in order to get max accuracy from the bore. Advise given above is valid. I'd try Bushmaster first since they need to have first opportunity to make good on the rifle. Call 'em, I'll bet they are hassle-free in taking the rifle in for work.

What magazine were you using? Was it the two piece riveted BM mag that came with the rifle? These are known to cause problems too. By the way BM will issue a UPS call tag for you to send the gun back to them for warranty repair with no shipping cost to you. Call them and ask to talk to Jarrod.
