Breaking in a new barrel

I'm about to break in a new rifle. Its a Rem.700 VS. in 308 Win. The barrel is a 26" heavy carbon steel with a 1 in 12 twist. I'd like some advice on the best break-in procedure. Thanks for your help

You can do the bench rest shooters "Break In". Buy 100 rounds of ammo and head for the range with the rifle and cleaning equipment. Clean the barrel, fire one shot, clean the barrel, repeat for 10 shots or so, then move up to 2 shots between cleanings for another 10 cleanings, move up to 5 shot between cleanings, repeat. At this point you will have fired 65 rounds. Fire 3 sets of 10 and use the last 5 rounds as a celebration, knowing you are done with this.

Jmclem, this is how I do it and how Shilen and Douglas recommend.

For the first 5 shots: fire one round, using a wet patch, stroke the bore 20 times, 10 in;10out. Wait 10 minutes, stroke 20 more times with a wet patch, then follow with three dry patches.

For the next 50 shots: shoot five rounds and follow the procedure above. George
