Breaking in a new AR-15

Is it neccessary to break in the barrel of a new AR-15? I know I follow a break in procedure, recommended by Guns & Ammo, with all of my hunting rifles.

If it's a factory barrel, just shoot it and clean it after your day at the range. Now if it's a custom barrel like Douglas or Krieger, then I would follow a break in procedure for the first 100 rounds. FWIW/

Here is my break-in routine:

1) clean rifle (make sure the chamber and bore are dry)
2) throw as much lead down range as possible

Followed this routine with all my rifles, including my AR15 service rifle (which I will most likely never compete with). All my rifles shoot great, and my service rifle and HK SL8-1 are both tack-drivers.

Yea, just clean the barrel and then shoot the hell out of it. The barrel will be broken in nicely after few thousand rounds :) If your AR is a Bushmaster then keep the bolt well oiled as they seem to run better when wet for the first few hundred rounds.
 
If your bore is chrome plated, be sure to run at least 200 rounds through it without cleaning. If it isn't chrome plated use whatever break-in voodoo you like.

I have never done anything more involved than taking a new rifle to the range and shooting 5 shot groups, cleaning after each group for the first 50 rounds. My 700PSS .308 shoots under 3/8" (best ever .192") and my 700VS .308 shoots under 1/2" (best ever .223") five shot groups at 100yd with factory Federal GM 168s.
