Break-in at work

There was a break-in where I work last night. It was after close so no one was there, but im thinking what would have happend if I was there.....
I live in a small good town but every town has its bad spots and that just happens to be really close to where I work. This was the second break-in in the last couple of months.

After the first one I ask the owner if I could carry, so I have been carrying for the last few months and im just hoping this doesn't happen to me but if it does im going to be prepared. So the real question here is what do I need to do to prepare myself to the fullest if something does happen?

keep your eyes and ears open at all times, use common sense, and make sure you can pull the trigger when it needs to be pulled (mindset).
A steady bit of range practice couldn't hurt either ;)

There really isn't anything you can do to prepare for having to pull the trigger besides trying to mentally prepare yourself and you have to know if the situation arises, you could do so.

thanks for the responses, im fairly confident I can and will make the right choices if need be.

edit- 91slicktop, good luck at USAF basic, I leave the 15th of June.

Think of a route out of the building because you may be able to shoot it out with one guy, but what happens if there is 2 or 3 guys ? better get some High cap mags.
you need the XDM .40cal holds 16 round mags.

I mean if one of the BG had a shotgun and caught you off guard it would pretty hard to get out of the situation. Your timing when he turned his back WOULD HAVE TO BE IMPECABLE.

and keep one in the hole!

I don't know what type of place you work at, but if it's OK with the boss, get a big dog and take him to work with you. They will sense trouble a lot sooner than we will.

Good luck

Protect yourself, whatever it takes, but don't risk your life to protect your employer's stuff (unless of course that's what you're getting paid for).

if you're carrying, you have two areas you need to prepare in:
1) tactics and mental preparation: be aware of problems, know the building really well, including exits and possible lines of fire. Know where good cover is (not concealment! Most walls can be shot through). Know how a threatening person acts as opposed to a wanna-be gangsta. Know what to do after the incident, so the police don't mix up you and the robber.
2) weapons training: be good at the draw, presentation, and actually shooting. If the situation devolves into a gun fight, you may need to shoot one handed from a strange stance. Be ready for that, not just the perfect stance shooting at targets squarely facing you at the range.

Do you ocationally work nights when the business is closed to the general public? If so, avoid it or get a companion, co-worker, dog (like someone previously suggested), alarm system, have the ouner do a securrity check on the building (use common sence). If there is petty cash or a register carefull during the day. If not, I wouldn't worry but keep an eye out allways;)

The most important thing I can see: what do you expect to accomplish with your weapon?

"Most" breakins are just that, . . . burglars looking for something they can sell or use, . . . they are not there to murder the employees like Attila the Hun in Rome or anything.

If you are carrying to keep your body from getting killed, . . . follow the advice given already: lines of fire, . . . cover areas, . . . concealed areas, . . . escape routes, . . . etc. Remember, . . . even as an employee, you are a private citizen and have no legal standing on deadly force except that it was needed to PROTECT YOUR LIFE.

May God bless,
Dwight

yeah I work at night, and there always a decent amount of cash there and I have to deposit it.

but once again thanks for the help.

Break ins always make us feel ...weird. We are sure of one attempt at my work. We had some discussion about it. We all hoped it never happens. There are three with carry permits there, but I think it unlikely for a daytime. Still, we're as ready as we can be with out freaking out the postman every time she comes in! :D

I worry more just going to the truck after work.

Weird. I posted the other day...then a co-worker came the next day talking about the break in at her second job. She cleans at an A.T.&T. office. It was hit about 2:00 am. She was about to freak because she is there alone most of the time. Found out it was the seventh A.T.&T. to be hit in mid. Tn. There was no warning before about the previous stores.:barf:

Mark.
