Brass clean up

Got to work yesterday on cleaning up my reloading area. I had many, many Tupperware containers with 9mm, .45ACP and .38 Spl.

By the time I finished amalgamating all my brass, I was left with 1. 5 Gal. pail of 9mm 2. 4Gal. of .38Spl 3. 2Gal. pail of 45ACP

Anybody know approx. how much this brass would be worth $$ ??.

Also any idea of how many cases of each that I have ?

Weigh 100 cases to find an average case weight and then weigh all the cases at once and divide by the weight of one case. That will give you an approximate number of cases.

Cases are worth from 5 cents to 1 dollar depending on what they are. 9mm are cheap as are 38 special and the 45 cases go for around 10 to 12 cents each, once fired. You can get a bit more for cleaned brass and a small amount more if they are sized and deprimed. I save my junk brass and take it to the recycling center for cash but you will never get rich off it at just over $1 per pound.

Rick,
What brand of cases and which head stamp? Different cases can have big differences from one to the next.
59.5 grains per 9mm round?

I did it....

Thanks Rick,

I finally got off the couch:) I dragged out the bathroom scale and my RCBS powder scale.

I did the 10 case average method and my numbers were within 3-4 cases of your numbers.

Final Tally .45ACP - 2,286 cases ( in a 2 Gal. pail Full )
9mm - 7,736 cases ( in 5 Gal Pail 90% full)
.38Spl. - 3,693 cases (3/4 of a 5 Gal Pail )

Next question is - How much could I expect to get $$ for this brass ???

Shootist, those are just using an estimated case weight. If you need exact numbers hand count them. Those estimates will get you very close. If looking at a single headstamp case you can be more accurate.

You can go to a number of commercial web-sites and see what they charge per thousand. There are individuals like yourself selling on places like GunBroker. The three calibers you have are generally not top dollar like some other harder to find calibers. You will notice shipping at around twelve bucks or so per thousand. It is hardly worth buying in quantities less than a thousand because of mailing cost.

Too funny......

Benchrest shooters would count, sort by brand and then weigh each case into different bins.
I know a BR guy who weighs the primers

I'm cheap and hunt for good deals on brass. The last 38 special and 45 ACP brass I bought was $.054 and $.056 respectively. The 38 special was cleaned, deprimed and sized. The 45 ACP was cleaned. They were advertised as pickup's from an indoor range and most likely once fired. This purchase was from a vendor over on the cast boolits forum Selling at these prices even uncleaned should result in a quick sale. I've never bought 9mm brass, but .02 to .03 is a good deal.

You might be able to get closer to $.10 for the 45 and 38 if you're willing to wait for a buyer, post a good description of what you've got, and where it came from etc...

You should be able to net close to $500 pretty easily. $120 for the 45, $200 for the 38 and $150 for the 9mm and they'd probably sell quickly.
