Brand New XD - Serious Weapon Malfunciton - Suggestions?

Hey everyone,

New to the forum, looking for some really sound advice for my problem here,

Bought a new XD Service Model 40cal, for my 21st a couple months ago to celebrate my right to bear arms.

Today when I was firing it, out of 250 rounds, my weapon jammed 15-20 times. Here is exactly what happened:
1.) When I loaded a new clip (made sure it was completely in and the magazine release was clicked), I would either release the slide with the slide release or manually do it. The new round would be half way lodged into the barrel and become stuck. I would have to pry the round out with my thumbnail. The rear of the casing would be angled towards the ground.
or
2.) It would do the same thing, but when I was firing. Half way through the magazine, 2nd shot, or last shot, it was random.

One time it did this for an entire clip and I had to recycle all the rounds...
It has happened with both of my magazines, brand new (3months old)

Today I put 250 rounds down range, so this makes a total of 400 rounds shot through my new XD. I have field cleaned it, I have not lubricated yet.

Is this a simple problem solved easily with a cleaning and a lubrication?

Or does this require the attention of a gunsmith?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thanks everyone

You've had the gun for 3 months, and prior to today... you had put 150 rounds through it now today you put another 250 rounds for a total of 400, and you never lubricated it?

It may not be the problem, but I think you better start there. Some guns aren't lubed ( at least well) from the factory and others are coated with in some anti-rust/moisture gunk with it helps to remove prior to use.

Honestly if your counting on this gun to defend your life, some more care is in order. Do you change the oil and lubrictae your vehicle vehicle or wait til' the thing dies??? :D :D
 
If you haven't field stripped, cleaned, and lubed the gun yet, do so. That will not void your warranty. It is also how well over half of "malfunctioning" guns are fixed. If you require any work beyond that to make the gun function properly, send it in to springfield. That's the cheapest way to go.

It sucks if you don't have any other guns, though..
 
It sounds like the base of the cartridge case is not sliding under the extractor as the slide moves forward to pick up a new cartridge. Give the extractor a good cleaning, then lube and work it with your finger to make sure it moves freely.
 
sound advise

Always field strip the gun and clean with a gun scrubber lubricant like remoil or any other you have before you shoot it straight out of the box. The factory always uses grease of some kind to keep it from rusting. The extractor most likely is binding the rim against the breechface because of this. Like the others have recommended, if this doesn't work,send it back to Springfield.
 
I saw a brand NIB Beretta 92FS INOX run like a bolt action last year. The guy picked it up and took it to the range without lubing it. After one of my friends handed him a bottle of CLP the gun ran flawlessly.

Perhaps we should ask a few more questions. :eek:

What sort(s) of ammo were you using? Would the jammed rounds rechamber easily?
 
When you seat a new mag with the slide locked back don't just hit the slide release button. Grab the back of the slide and pull hard like you are trying to hit yourself in the shoulder.

This will not only will help with the fail to feed problems you are having, but studies have shown your ability to use fine motor skills (such as reaching up to release a slide with one finger) in a high stress situation is seriously impaired.

If it was my gun I would just send it back to Springfield and get it checked out by them. It should come with a lifetime warrranty on it, so there should be no charge for it.
 
I'm with Brennan...I have a XD .357 and a SubCompact .40, both with about 1000+ rounds through them and not one 'function...clean, lube and 'good ammo'.... :cool:
 
I believe we are speaking to a ghost. Chrome has posted twice on this forum, and may not have read this since posting it two months ago.
 
The one question that hasn't been asked is

IS THE AMMO FACTORY OR RELOADS?

If reloads, try factory. If it works, check the crimp on the reloaded ammo against factory, with calipers.

Same pistola, same problem...

That was me too, brand new XD-40 about two years ago. I cleaned and lubed as others have suggested. What did it for me was polishing the feed ramp with something called "emron cloth?". I might not be using the correct term. After my first shoot, it had accumulated some stuff on the feed ramp, the result was the same as yours. Anyway, now it works great and I use it without any problems.
