Brand New Savage TR 22LR Shoots 12in right

All,

Any ideas on what may cause this? I put a Redfield Revolution 3x9 40 scope on it. I am not sure it is the scope or the rifle. I bore sighted it best I could with the naked eye which I have done on plenty of rifles before. With the windage on the scope adjusted all the way it still shoots about 12 inches right but is one hell of a group this is at 25 yards on an indoor range. There is no damage to the crown or anything else that I can see.

Thoughts?

Any chance you can verify the scope's operation on another rifle or perhaps borrow another scope for testing on the Savage?

Couple things, could be scope mount holes misaligned, also possible barrel problem, go the easy route first try a different scope. I had same problem some months ago with a savage 223 after trying two scopes, two mounts, returned to savage expecting they would say a warped receiver however they installed a new barrel and when returned it took 3 rounds to be zeroed in and shoots .500 or less groups.

You could use Burris Zee rings with inserts to correct the problem but I do not like putting a band aid on a possible production fault.

I have heard of TRs with barrels mounted wrong. You can check that by laying a long straight edge against one side of the receiver then measuring the distance from the end of the barrel to the straight edge, repeat for the other side. Ideally the 2 measurements would be exact. If they are out, contact Savage, if they are close enough. If they are within spec, then it has to be issue with the scope mount or the scope itself.

I lean towards the scope or mounts being the culpret...
Try switching the front and rear bases (if you have 2 piece bases). Shoot for sighting and see where you stand.
If not any better...
Then try switching the rings front and rear. Shoot again.
Still not any better...
Then swap the bases back again but leave the rings swapped front to rear. Shoot again...
If this doesn't yield any significant changes then try a different scope.

Then, if still no improvement, send it to Savage...

Edit: you might also try a different set of rings also...

That was my hope also but out of the past 3 Savages purchased 2 had to be returned for problems and I'm a Savage fan, both were repaired returned and shoot great, but they have been problems with scope alignment in recent months as note on various boards, now you can shim and jury rig the problem but I wont do that because on occasion switch scopes and it becomes a major problem unless everything is aligned perfect.

If your are happy with the gun and scope you could shim inside of the rings to get it right. If there is a problem with a componet you'd likely want it fixed.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I just got a chance to go to the range, the rifle is fixed a so I wanted to follow up with everyone. I swapped the burris rings I had for Millet Windage adjustable rings. This baby really shoots when I do my part. I will be posting a full review pictures and all this weekend on my blog. We could not see anything visibly wrong with the holes drilled or the bases.
