BPS Chokes

Well, I've accepted the expert advice of folks here and bought a Browning BPS shotgun. Now, I've got one small "problem": The barrel (right side) carries the inscription "INVECTOR BPS SPECIAL STEEL 12GA 2 3/4" AND 3" FIELD MODEL-28". I figured that this gun uses "INVECTOR" chokes. I then bought a choke with the inscription "PLUS SKEET-LEAD IC-STEEL BROWNING". But this choke is longer than the one presently sitting in the barrel (IMP CYL) and simply would not fit!

I should be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

Benzene,
No problem, you only need to get the right choke style. Browning's original choke system is called the Invector style. The newer choke system is called the Invector Plus style. THE TWO STYLES ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE as you discovered. The original Invector style is also used by Winchester and Mossberg. The Invector Plus is only used by Browning (I think). If you can't find original Invector chokes, check out Briley Mfg website. They are one of the foremost choke experts in the country. I recently bought several Invector style chokes for my Browning Citori from them.

Thanks LHB1

Thanks LHB1. Two further questions please, if I may:(1) Would you say that the BPS shotgun I bought is more of an antique than one that could be used? (2) Is it a matter of changing the barrel (to what the manual calls "back-bored") to update to the "newer choke system "?

Thanks!:)

Your BPS is far from an antique, and a very good shotgun. If it is in good condition there is no reason not to shoot it extensively. Figure on it needing a tune-up at 100,000 rounds.....

You could change the barrel to a newer one and use the + choke system. For what it would cost the gain would be very very slight.

Great relief

Folks, I can't say how valuable your thoughts have been and continue to be to me personally.

HSMITH, your input gives me great reassurance. I love this gun and it shoots flawlessly (despite me:) ). I would have been shattered to know that it was just an antique and that I've been toying around with a tired and therefore dangerous weapon. Thank you so much!

I've checked the manual which seems to indicate that it was manufactured "Pre-1993" (p. 17). In firearms and cars especially (and a very few other things), I always go for "brand new", but my love of this weapon was almost instantaneous and this was more than a bit augmented by highly-valued inputs on this forum. So I bought it and expect to make full use of it (with family, friends, etc.) You could understand why HSMITH's reassurance is invaluable.

I should have checked on this forum before I rushed out and bought a brand new Winchester 1300 Defender.:o

Benzene,
Absolutely NOT an antique. In contrast, the Browning BPS is a very high quality modern gun of a proven style. I bought one for my son several years ago. The "backbored" barrel is the latest and greatest "advance" in shotgun barrels but strangely there are multitudes of guns with standard barrels and interchangeable chokes still doing the job well. There are even more older guns with "heaven forbid" built-in chokes that still manage to produce good patterns and hit the skeet/trap target or bird just as well as the new backbored guns. But if the new backbored barrel is your thing, you can either check with Briley about backboring your current barrel or look for a new backbored barrel and slip it on your receiver.

Good shooting and be safe.
