BP Holster Question

Not sure if this is correct forum.......but

I have a 1851 Colt Navy Sheriff 44 cal. revolver.

I have spent the better part of this evening looking thru the internet to find the appropiate CW stlye holster for this revolver.

Almost all of what I can see are made for the larger version of the 1851 Navy.

I know there is the simple Navy Frog style holster, but would prefere something a little more substantial.

Would like to a do a little reenacting, and want to be period appropiate.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

There were no "Sheriff's Model" Navies* (or Armies for that matter) made so your only recourse will probably be to have a holster made for this pistol. These short barrel guns, along with the majority of the brass framed models, are the product of the imagination of the Pietta design team.

*I know there is a 5-inch 1851 Navy in the William Locke book which is said to be original but if so it is most likely a one-off. This revolver is now in a collection in the UK.

Cabelas has a remington black powder holster that will fit the gun, I have one for mine. Paid 20 bucks. Leather.
 
If you are looking for a "flap style" holster, I don't believe that I've ever seen one for the short barreled model you are talking about - I haven't checked the one that was referred to at Cabelas though. You probably could take a standard Civil War style flap holster that fits a Navy and cut it down though. This would require cutting it for the correct barrel length, re stitching the seam so it won't separate and sewing in a new plug on the end. The only difference should be in the barrel lenght - the profile for the loading lever and barrel dimensions should be the same as far as space goes. If you aren't able to do this, try to find someone who does leatherwwork as it really isn't that hard of a job. You can go to the site for the NSSA (North-South Skirmish Association) and there are links to various "sutlers" or do a search for Civil War sutlers - most carry holsters in stock for the standard '51 Colt Navy, '60 Colt Army, '58 Remington, etc. Good luck and have fun! I have considered the Navy Frog Holster as a last resort, but it just looks so wimpy. Trying to find something that is a little more manly and not break the bank. Tasteful but inexpensive.:rolleyes:

Stick it in a standard 51 Navy holster and no one will ever know.

Or if necessary, just put some material in the bottom of a holster where the extra length of barrel would be to fill it in a little bit.
 
lots of examples exist from the 1850-1880 time frame that were made by the actual users. As a result many are just plain out ugly and crude. but functional. a normal working man wouldnt give a rats butt if the holster was fancy or not. hed simply have two requirements
holster must keep weapon inside it, and on the gun belt
holster must do a decent job of keeping most gunk from getting on gun.
 
Actually just about any Colt or Colt replica short barrel holster should fit fine.There is no real need to be that specific for these type of holsters.I made one for my Great western and have put a Colt and a Ruger Bisley in it to check the fit and they were fine.As far as period correct goes alot depends on the persona you want when doing CAS.Some groups are very strict, while some allow more "Hollywood" style.Just remember to have a true period correct rig made will cost a bit,as it's not easy to make something new look old correctly.Dave:)
