Boyd's Replacement Stocks

I'm going to get rid of the "skeleton" stock on my Ruger 77 Mk II all-weather stainless .300 Win Mag and replace it with a "drop in" Boyd's laminated stock.

It says some "fitting" might be necessary and that little sentence has me concerned. Has anyone ever gone this route and if so what were the results? I'm getting this stock laser checkered also. :)

The skeleton stock on my Ruger is just such a pain in the a**. You can't just switch slings. The noisy and fixed sling thingymajigs on it require you to unhook the new sling from the attached QD swivels and attach it directly to these horrible things. How stupid is that? In any case, I'll have a Ruger skeleton stock to sell, give away or throw away shortly. With an "attached" claw sling! :D

They did mention 22' to 26" long barrel so would thing it has to do with barrel contour and opening the barrel channel.

I bought one for my K31 and was impressed with it for the $85 or so that I spent. I bought it because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a stock seeing as it was the first time I was fitting a stock and figured at the least I'd learn on it. Fitting it wasn't hard, I think the K31 stock is less complete than what you're looking at, and I didn't need a bunch of tools. Basically sandpaper, a small scraper and that was pretty much it. The secret is to go slow. Don't rush it and it's pretty easy. Sorry I don't have a pics of it...but I haven't finished. I still haven't bedded it yet...keep getting sidetracked.

Hi, I didn't buy that particular stock, but I did buy the thumbhole version for my rem 700 adl. I ordered it on a sunday evening and had it in my hands thursday noon. My action dropped right in, it fit perfectly. Here's a pic.:D

A Ruger in 300 Win mag has a larger diameter barrel than standard. You will likely have to open up the barrel channel a little. I've never done it on laminated, but have with fiberglass and walnut. Select a deep well socket that just fits inside the barrel channel. Wrap with sandpaper and work it back and forth inside the stock. You may have to move up to another size socket to get what you need. With wood, you will need to refinish the inside of the stock. I'd suspect it may require a little more work with laminate since it is harder.

Those stocks have a cult like following. You should have little trouble selling it for $75-$100.

I'm happy to see that Boyd's acknowledges the tendency for a birch laminate stock to spread under stock screw stress and are now using pins or through-bolts to hold them together. The new Ruger Gunsite Scout bolt-action has through-bolts and they actually make it look tougher. Pillar bedding also works well to maintain the integrity of birch laminated stocks.

I love thumhole stocks for range rifles, but they're a bit slower to get a second shot off, so IMHO, they're not as good for hunting rifles. They're also not good for opposite-hand shots, which sometimes needed when hunting from stands.

Gee, whiz...

I love those Ruger "skeleton" stocks...if you want to get rid of it, I'll cover the shipping!
To answer your question, though, the Boy's are fine stocks. The laminated are a bit heavy, as you'd expect. I have Boyd's replacement walnut stocks on an 03A3, 3 M1 Garands, and a Winchester 94. Have never run into a problem. I believe the only fitting tools I used were some lampblack, a small riffle and a couple of small wood chisels. Didn't have to do much.

Brownell's makes a 2-handed tool that has multiple cutting edges that is used to open up barrel channels. Cheap and convenient to use.

Good luck with your project.

I bought one for my Mosin Nagant sporter...
Inletting was way off and I had to spend hours with a Dremel fixing it.

I've read of others having issues like mine, many drop right in. Overall they're good bang for the buck and I'd buy again.

I have the the thumb hole varmit model on my 17 Fireball and 221 Fireball rifles. I glass bedded the action on both rifles but I do glass bed most all of my bolt action rifles. I like the Boyd stocks.

I have a .300 Win Mag 77 Mk II all-weather stainless. Does anyone know if the barrel contour on it is the same as say for a .270 Win? I'm going to go this route whether it drops in or I have to remove some wood but I'm hoping it will just drop in. I built a rifle years ago using a new Mauser Supreme .243 barreled action and inletting a semi-inletted Fajen stock. It turned out beautifully but I remember alot of dinking around getting it bedded right (without glass bedding). I want this done NOW! :D

Ruger has a heavier barrrel contour on 300 Win mags and 25-06 rifles than standard. The 7mm Rem mags have a thinner barrel just like 270 and 30-06. Why those 2 and not others, I have no idea.

Not sure, but I'd bet the medium and big bore magnums use the same heavy barrel as the 300 and 25-06, but I've not handled enough of those to remember for sure.

boyds

I have 2 of them; 1 on a Yugo M24/47 and 1 on a 93/95 Spanish mauser.
very minor fitting on both, used a dremel around some action areas and
a dowel with sandpaper to free float the barrels. awesome stocks !! they
are a best buy in my book. I will put up some pics later.

I already uploaded pics in thread (German 98k) and it won't let me load them again.
also a pic in thread (Mauser Crazy)
