Bowling pins then on to IDPA

Sounds like a good idea. But after last night I know I have a long way to go.
Pistol- Colt Combat Commander Matte stainless 45acp (stock) Well I put some bright orange nail polish on the front post.
Round 1
9 rounds 19.4 sec. (thought hey I can do this. Big mistake.)
Round 2
? rounds 24.56 sec.
Round 3
? rounds DNF (that will be the last time I use moly-lube at a match)
Round 4
? rounds 44.? sec. (about 2.5 mags worth I think)
Round 5
21 rounds DNF (cleared 4 pins with 6 rounds and shot 15 at the last pin.) I swear that last pin was mocking me.

Welcome to the club. My first plate match went something like that. Cleaned the rack in 45sec with many-many rounds every string. After I showed clear and re-holstered my mentor had a few inspirational words punctuated with the occasional good-natured-thump to the head. Something along the lines of "Ya gotta hit 'em for it to count. You spent too much money on ammo."
I was convinced after that the secret is to hit the plate then move to the next. Went into "bullseye mode" at the next match, took me ~2 seconds per plate but each string was right at 13 seconds. My Yoda bought me a Dr.Pepper and asked me why I watched each plate fall. "Sight alignment, trigger control and the plate will go over. You're wasting time BETWEEN the plates."
Over a few more matches my times slowly decreased. Then I put together 6 second strings. Wasn't doing anything different just smoother. Several other shooters noted my improvement. I bought Yoda a Coke that night.

At one of our good-ol' boy pin shoots, we decided to bust one guy's gonads. We put him first on the roster - with a pin SCREWED to the table.
Took about 5 hits for him to figure it out.
We also stuck a prop behind a popper on him once.
Ritual abuse and humiliation are the hallmarks of male bonding!

There were 5 of us non-classifieders and I scored 3rd out of 5.
YEAH.
Was shooting my combat commander against some DAO/DO and one was shooting a Wilson.
It was great fun. They set up a simulated house that we went into blind. Had to check around every door and corner. Had to check through every window. They set up a total of I think 10 targets. Had to double tap 5 paper and had 5 pins and plates. I went slow 144 sec. and was scored down 10.
I shot a little better with the static targets.
Stress is fun!
I'll be going in this coming friday for the classifier shoot.

-BreakFree CLP.
-Never clean, modify, disassemble, or otherwise touch your (presumably operating) gun before a match.
-Bring an extra everything, including shoes, holster, and belt, glasses, muffs, and gun. And three times the ammo you might need.
-No matter what is in your mind before, when given the signal to "START!" remember you're holding a real, loaded, gun.
-Think 'sight alignment trigger control'.
-And remember, accuracy takes precedence over speed.

Never touch a gun before a match. Yep. Learned that the last time I shot my qualifier for CHL. Had a damn S&W SW9M that would jamb at times. The night before I took it apart to polish the feed ramp one more time to see if it would help. Wasn't paying attention and drove out the wrong pin.
It was the pin that held the barrel, trigger and trigger return spring in the frame. Dangest mess I have ever had. Took at least 2 1/2 hours to reassemble it. Had to make a tool to guide the pin back through. Managed to crack one ear on the trigger. Went ahead and shot the qualifier with it. Had no trigger malfuctions. Bought a new trigger from S&W and installed it. Sold it shortly after that. It was the worst gun I have ever owned. I was the only person in my house that could load it without it jambing up. So, no need to tell me about last minute tinkering. No..sir.
Will take me a while to get some extra gear. It's that dang budget thingy.
These guys I'm shooting with are very rigid on safety.
Accuracy over speed. Yep. That's what took me so long to shoot the house set up. Some shot it in 95 sec. I shot it in 144 sec. It would help if I would learn to count shots. I would know when to recharge.
