and buy one of those dal-garned Frog (MAS 49/56) guns.

I've been looking at a semiauto 308, going back and forth between a rebarreled Garand and an FAL. I found a good article on the JPFO website regarding how to modify the MAS to work properly with 308 ammo, and it's beginning to look like the least expensive (albeit arguably not the best resale value) alternative. I'd appreciate constructive comments, e.g. who's got the least expensive "decent" FAL's available, final cost on a 308 Garand, etc. Let 'er rip!

another option to consider, depending on what you're looking for, is a Chinese M14 clone.. they're pretty decent shooters, and close enough to spec that you can use standard M1A parts and mags in most cases. They also have forged recievers, and you can eventually "pay as you go" your way to a nicer rifle than the Springfields. Cost -- 600-700, so not as cheap as your other options, but a far sight easier to afford than a Springfield M1A.. CETME is another option in that ballpark.

That said.. sounds to me that for what you want, it might be better to save up the extra couple hundred for a FAL. Heck, maybe get the reciever now, and buy a parts kit for the remainder when you have money? I believe both are sold from several places out of Shotgun News, yes?

Do what you will, but I think the widespread popularity of both the FAL and M1A are a good reason to go with one of those patterns.. lots of parts, people who know how to fix 'em, etc etc. Of course, more competition for mags, to ;)

There was a Saiga .308 with a scope and an extra mag at AimSurplus.com ... they are great people. You DO have choices.
