Bought the 36LS

It's a lot smaller than my 60 2" or my Detective Special but looks like a great carry choice. Just don't care for the grips which don't feel right in my hands, and I'm a petite lady. Did some looking around and decided that maybe the pachmayr might be a tad too big, even the compac for this gun, so I'm eyeing Craig Spiegel. Should I get smooth or checkered? Will these wooden grips be too much for a .38 or manageable? I'd like to keep wood on the gun and I do realize it's not for target or long term shooting. Appreciate any feedback, thank you. :)

Craig Spegel = excellent choice for anything.
I prefer non finger groove checkered over anything else.

The Houge bantam grips are the way to go for concealment carry. But they do leave the backstrap exposed. This may not be as comfortable as the full wraparound grips.

But I have them on my 649 and my 432 and they work well, though both guns will leave a sore spot on my palm after 50 rounds at the range.

By the way, congrats on your 36LS!

No, not all--Spegels do though. Those it may not be an issue for you (particularly with a J-frame) when you start enlosing the backstrap, you lenthen the trigger reach somewhat, and add to overall length of the weapon which can be counter productive when it comes to concealment.

FWIW, I have Hogue Bantums on M65LS, I have no problem (sore palms, etc.) even firing .357 Magnums (and I'd recommend you stick to 148-grain wadcutters for carry and practice in your M36LS so it should be even less an issue for you). The Bantums are inexpensive. Try them, and if they don't work try something else. Everybody's hands are different what works for me or someone else may not work for you, but the Bantums do seem to fit most people's hands pretty well.

Smooth or checkered is a personal opinion. Some like to be able to slide a gun in their hand and others like something to help lock it in place.
If the revolver is for concealment then remember that a stock covering the backstrap will be larger.
It's a lot smaller than my 60 2"
Is your M60 one of the newer models built on the J Magnum frame and the M36LS an older model built on the J-frame? I just can't see how the M36 is a lot smaller than the M60 because the M60 is just the stainless steel version of the M36. They are both Chiefs Specials.

Comparing side by side, the DS and the 60 kind of dwarf the LS, and since the 60 is the .357 model and not the .38 - I imagine that alone would require a bigger gun for the caliber. Still, the LS was bought more for deeper carry; thanks for reminding me about going with wadcutters. If I go with those for pratice and carry, the Hogue would probably work just fine. Thanks for the recommendation. :)

The original J-frame was enlarged to handle the .357 mag cartridge, thus your M60 being larger. As all the small frame revolvers are now built on the new J Magnum frame the newer M36LS is the same size as the M60. This is also why the .38 spl revolvers are now fully +P rated because the frame is now stronger.
