Bought a Winchester 1300

Hello all. I bought a 1300 Defender on Monday! Cool gun. I paid $269 full retail, but I finally found one in stock and I had the cash so oh well. A couple of questions though. What's a good starter ammo. The guy at the shop steered me to some PMC 2 3/4 7 1/2 shot clay target. Is that a good shofter shooting starter round? Any other suggestions?
What's the deal with the spring and ball under the mag cap. That thing is a pain in the a$$. How do you get the little bb back on correctly? Is it necessary to have it, can I shoot with the mag cap just screwed down by itself?
Thanks for all the info.

Congrats on the 1300. Use the lightest cheap ammo you can find, something like 2 3/4 dram, 1 oz "Field" loads are nigh ideal.

That little ball should be staked in place. Use the warranty on this.

I like Estate brand for low-cost practice ammo. It patterns a little better in my shotgun. Can usually find it for $3.49-$3.99 a box if you look around.

If you don't know what patterning is, do a search. Pattern several different low-cost, low-recoil loads and I predict that your shotgun will show a preference for one or more loads.
