Bought a Trailside, need ammo advice

I got a Sig Trailside today and could use some advice on ammo. I'm used to buying bricks of .22 of whatever the local Mart has on sale and was lost when I checked out the large variety of target ammo the shop had available.Any recommendations appreciated.

Easy, buy one box (50 rounds) of each and see what groups best. Then stock up on that ammo. Preferably from the same lot as the box you tested.

I usually choose the best performong high velocity rounds for hunting and the best performing cheap x-Mart special stuff and buy a few thousand rounds of each.

One recommendation is to stay away from bullets that have a thick coating of gooey waxy lube on them and bullets that have very soft points. I've found that the wax tends to build up in magazines and cause malfunctions. Also, really soft pointed bullets don't tend to feed well in autos since the tips tend to get mashed as they're driven into the feed ramp by the slide.

They target stuff like Eley, RWS, and such shoots very well usually. But at $5 to $10 a box is way too costly for the informal shooting that I do.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Well, I'd recommend .22LR rimfire ammo for that gun. :-)

Seriously, the previous poster said it best, buy a bunch of samples and see which one the gun likes. I have a bunch of .22's, and each one has a "favorite" brand. I think ammo selection is much more important in the .22 than most centerfire guns.

Give Federal Gold Medal Target (711) a try. I've found it to be pretty accurate and clean shooting. Many of my .22s like it. Cost is ~$18/brick.

I've had good luck with CCI Standard Velocity, PMC Scoremaster, Aguila SE Standard Velocity, and Winchester T22. CCI Blazer is also surprisingly good for its price.

If you want to try Eley, Eley Standard Pistol (in the teal box) is the least expensive variety.

I agree with Mom T on the soft lubed bullet thing. I shot CCI Standard Velocity out of my Ruger Mark I and it jammed quite often, but I thought it was the gun malfunctioning. I bought a Ruger Mark II Target, brand new without a round through it, and it started doing the same thing with the CCI ammo. I cleaned the lube out of the clips, which have a pronounced angle to them and force the bullets forward into the front of the magazine, and fed 300 rounds through it the rest of the day without any trouble. Do not get me wrong, I am a diehard CCI fan (I buy two bricks of Standard Velocity and Stingers every three months) but it would not feed well through my pistols, but it feeds and shoots well out of my 10/22. Do not give up on cheaper ammo though, my Ruger shoots Remington Thunderbolts more accurately than any of the expensive ammo I put through it.

Oleg V. told me that Remmington Gold is the best (cleanest) and I totally agree. Using that will make cleaning the gun much easier at the end of the day. Thanks Oleg!
