Bought a Savage 42

Riflemen:
Bought a used Savage 42 at the LGS. Got it for $360, a touch pricy but not too bad. Top barrel is 22 magnum, over the standard 410 bottom. Took it to the range yesterday and shooting 2.5 inch shells loaded with #8 shot I was able to hit a clay pigeon, on the fly, about half the time. I'm thinking it will make the perfect squirrel hunting gun. It seems rugged enough. Not real fond of the shell extraction mechanism, but it works okay with enough force. The biggest problem is that I can't find any 22 mag shells yet. I'm sure that day will come.

Some say the rifle shotgun combos aren't accurate but I'm curious what your results will be. I always wanted one but couldn't find one for a good price. Good luck finding ammo. It has to be out there somewhere. I bought the last box of 22mag I saw at a local store before christmas but I was in Cabelas a few weeks ago and saw it on the shelf. Should have bought another box for my marlin mag.

.

My Model 24's (all early guns) are very accurate, mostly due to the barrels being hard soldered together for their entire length.

We will see . . . .

Yes, I've read a couple of reviews that said the two barrels didn't shoot to the same spot. When ever I find some 22mag . . . I'll find out if my does and let you know.

Mine haven't been off by much - I always zero the rifle bbl, and (since I don't shoot slugs though mine) let the shot spread take care of any difference in the POI.

I bought one in 22 magnum over 410 like yours. So far with CCI 40 gr. FMJ its been pretty accurate out to 30 and 40 yards shooting water jugs. My old eyes needed a little orange paint on the front sight but I'm pleased with the accuracy thus far. Using 3" #4 and #6 Remington 410 ammo produces a pretty nice pattern out to about 25 yards which was surprising. The little 42 is so light (under 5 lbs.) that it is very easy to carry. I bought it as a yard and field gun for vermin removal. 22 mag. CCI shot shells work well on slithery vermin. I know some people don't care for the looks of the 42 but it works so well for my needs that I don't care if its not pretty like my Savage 24 Camper's Companion..:D

Slithery Vermin

Dennis:

Unless those slithery vermin are of the poisonous variety, they are your friend. Kill all the snakes and you wind up with rats!

However, I knew a guy who used 22 shot shells in his work shed to take out the mice. That could be some fun shooting.

How hard of a time are you having finding those 22 mags?

Prof,

Yup, just the bad ones. Locally not much 22 WMR inventory in the gun shops. Hit or miss, but actually I've seen more magnum than 22LR. I have a pretty good stash of various loads as I've liked the magnum round for a long time.

I have the 22lr version. Would have preferred the 22 wmr version. I did not like the sights. EGW sells a rail for the 42. I put one on mine. Haven't decided what optic I'm going to mount - leaning towards a Burris Fastfire.

Got all the pieces

Okay. The EGW scope mount and a tru-glo red dot have arrived. 22 mags are ordered from Cheaper than Dirt. Now I just have to put it all together and I can finally shoot the rifle barrel of my Savage 42. Will let you know how it shoots.

I picked up the Burris Fastfire. Sadly I run out of adjustment sighting in. I'm about an inch low from point of impact at 25 yards. Someday I'm going to pull the egw mount and thin it out - get my speed dot zeroed.

Interesting little weapon. They've likely come a long way in build and accuracy then the one I had.
Many many years ago. My Comb rife was chambered in 22/410 and it came with a handsome glossy plastic stock. One sad evening foolish me I left mine standing in the corner of the folks un-heated mud porch after checking on my rabbit snares one school evening. An especially cold Minnesota evening & night. Next morning big crack of noise we all heard as I brought it thru the kitchen doorway into our warm wood heated kitchen. Its stock had suffered a major injury. No doubt the warm air caused a full length (crack) from stocks pistol grip to its butt plate. Which BTW lead to its early transportation to the County Land Fill. After thought 50 yrs later: Point & shoot 410 barrel worked pretty well on any small game I encountered. But its upper 22 barrel couldn't hit a darn thing from 5-Ft. to 50. I had a better chance of harvesting a partridge cuddled up under the snow by literately falling on top of it than chance a 22 shot made with that rifle. These days I wish I had that 30-30 /12 ga. combo they once were offered in. At least its owner got his monies worth as it came with a fancy (birch) wood stock. ;)
