Bought a S&W 65 3"

slow

I just bought this gun last night from my local gun store. I am curious what .38 Special and .357 Magnum works best for accuracy (if I do my part..) .I bought the gun used, it's in very good to excellent condition and I am curious as to when it was manufactured?

Thanks, Brett

If you call S&W, they will give you the date of manufacture (1-800-331-0852). As far as ammo, mine shoots pretty close to where I point it with everything I've fed it so far. If you have a chance to take pictures, I'm sure a lot of us would like to see them, that's one of the most sought after defense revolvers available.

Accuracy is something you can't predict. Each revolver is an individual and you have to find exactly what it likes to obtain it's best accuracy. That means shooting all loads you can get your hands on. What my gun like yours may hate even though they come off the assembly line one behind the other.

A bit of info - -

For an estimated date of mfg, give us the serial number - - Substitute XX for the final two numerals if you wish: 7D881XX was probably produced in 1981.

My 65 shoots both Rem and Win 158 gr. LSWCHP+P .38 Spl very well. I'm still going through the .357 loads to find one it likes best. It does okay with Speer 125 Gold Dot HP, but the muzzle blast is a bit fierce. I think I'll like the 158 GDHP better.

Handloads: .38 Spl
158 gr LRN and 4.0 gr of Win 231. 627 fps from a 2" M37; 701 in a 4" M19
158 gr LSWC with 4.5 of 231 is accurate and should be a decent small game load.

I only had a few on hand but am very impressed with:
.357 cases, 162 LSWC, 7.0 gr of Unique. 1074 fps in my 4" Colt.

I'm really enjoying my M65 - - Hope yours is as satisfactory.

Johnny
